Ducafe seat project
Re: 750ss Cafe Racer seat unit
Marty, it's a plug and funnily enough I went and got some mold release today
It will allow me to get the fiberglass unit off of the plug
That way I have the option of making a mold to enable me to use it again
The release wax has to be applied, then wait 40 mins, then polish............8 times

Re: 750ss Cafe Racer seat unit
cool so will you be able to house the battery and other things there then
although i read you must try and keep the reg/rec in the air flow to stop over heating, one fella in the us put a pc fan ontop of his reg/rec very clever idea to get around the problem..

Re: 750ss Cafe Racer seat unit
So now we have some body filler which is spread all over the plug
When dry this will be sanded down and refilled then sanded down etc until its the dogs b#"!*+ks

The final finished article has to be painted with acrylic paint which withstands the heat of the fiberglass
Then Mold release is polished on, left to dry for 40 minutes then buffed to a shine...............8 times
N.B. I reckon I should have painted the plug before using filler, to seal the foam
We'll see

We used to use two or three coats of exterior (water based) sandtex to seal sculptured polystyrene from the next GRP layers which otherwise would cause it to melt. The sandtex filler can be sanded smooth.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Re: 750ss Cafe Racer seat unit
Well I have hit the first hurdle
Didn't put enough catalyst in the mix so it's not dry after 24hrs
Will have to start again

On with building Rome then!!!
Am I a lucky bugger?
Or am I a lucky bugger
The filler has gone just hard enough to sand
It's filling the sand paper a bit quick but I reckon I won't have to start all over again
At least I don't think so

Nice one dude
Would of been a pain if you had to start again. Now as you are sanding be prepared to get OCD at the shape as you sand.
You will sand
look at the shape
sand some more
look some more
not be completely happy
sand some more again
go in for a cuppa
think to yourself that the shape aint quite right and you will go out to the workshop at stupid o'clock to satisfy your compulsion.
Enjoy mate.

Re: 750ss Cafe Racer seat unit
Well it's 3 in the morning and I just need to sand a little bit more............oh bugger! Where's the filler

Re: 750ss Cafe Racer seat unit
I appears I am not so lucky
The filler has dried in some areas but not others
Luckily it peels off easily with little damage

Got the tank back. So it's starting to come together
