Diffrence in same engine? what is this for?

Post by seb421 »

Hi just putting the engine in now and noticed a difference between the two, the both came from a pre 19ltr updated bike

This is my original engine with no nipple at the front cylinder

And this is the replacement

i've no idea if i what should be attached to it? The rear both have the connector with the hose attached to it, but not sure what to do with the front, swap my bolt over or get a pipe to somewhere?

Replacement engine 1998 model ....

Says its a Water-pump inspection hole in my 1997 Workshop Manual, why does mine have this fitting and pipe on it, i cant take it off to swap over? should I be swapping the hole case over, didn't want to have to get another gasket.

Didn't think was any differences with the bikes until the 19ltr 2001 update

As you'll be probably needing to balance the carbs after the swap, keep the nipple on and get a length of 4mm ID hose while you've got easy access, and run it to the left of the bike. Plug it so it's airtight with a golf tee or bolt. See in the workshop knowledge base Carb Balancing

Just to advise the FY version did have some updates to the original engine before it went to 19 litres, dont know what these are but it seems you have found one lol.
She told me she was 16.

Thanks chaps,

So will I be okay using this engine with the FY (2000) Model ICM / CDI or what ever they are calling it?

Just swapped the Starter over to one on the replacement engine the rubber cap has split at some point and the bolt and that has all rusted up :( so exchanged it for my original which looks to be good and i know works fine.

Going bed for a bit now, get back on it around 4pm before i go work

night.

Some engines had the litle elbow fitted, and a drain pipe, and some just had the hoile.
TBH the elbow is better; it stops grit and crud form getting into and stopping up the hole.
The idea is that if the ceramic seal form the water pump seal gives up the ghost, you get a tiny (or bigger) trickle of coolant coming out of the hole. which warns you to get a new seal.

But they seem to last the life of the bike, never had to replace one, at least.

Not worth faffing about with, swapping it over, but I suppose it does no harm.
You're more likely to notice water trickling out of the front of the engine, possibly not out of a drain hose beneath it.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
