So, the fibreglassing has been done. Here's a few pictures of the process

Covered the plug with foil so that the seat will come off the plug easily

Placed on a wider board which is also covered

Image

Nice day so outside we go and get started

Image

A few more layers to go and we can take it inside to let it dry overnight

Notice the fibreglass is extended out from the base of the seat

Image

Plug came out easily, next thing is to remove the foil

Image

As you can see, the plug is still usable

Image

By laying the plug on another board the finished article has an edge that can be cut off

This makes sure the bottom ends of the seat are nice and thick where they went round the corner

Image

Now for a bit of sanding and filler

One problem I came across is the foil

Because it is covering a large area it needs to be slightly sticky to stop it coming away from the plug

Anyone got suggestions for an alternative covering or how to make the foil stick to the plug which can be wiped off?

yeh use tissue paper or paper mache to make a mould then it can be scrubbed away when its gone off.

got a bit of fibleglassing to do meself on some race fairings and single seat.
im considering adding sidepanels / number boards to cover the void bit in the subframe near the rear shock.... standard setup it looks a bit bare there imo.
and also fabricate an undertray for the seat then i can get rid of most of the original one, just keeping the battery carrier and where the icm & cdi goes.

Ok, made a new seat unit

The first one was a trial to make sure I can do it, and also to find out exactly what I want

The overall shape was good but I want the seat to sit on top of the frame, not hang down over it, so a new one was needed

I the previous attempt I used silver foil to cover the plug which didnt stay in one place easily

I asked for ideas as to what else could be used and Jazzscott suggested foil tape and it works, great idea buddy

Now trying some colours, this is the first go but I reckon to use wider green and red and also may try the seat unit in black with the stripes on

Lots of sanding and filling later:

I reckon the white stripe is too wide and the green and red are too narrow

Once if have prated around and the colours have been decided, I can do the final prep and do the paint job correctly

Voila!!
