Tank Skinning for a Strom

Post by seb421 »

Hi while I'm waiting for the Repsol Fairings to arrive i have time to make a skin of the tank

I'm wanting to make something like this blade's tank cover to sit over the storm tank

Image

what fibreglass kit will i need, and what type of wax? how much sq feet of fibreglass matt would it require at a guess?

I've never done anything with fibreglass my self and I know a few on here are a dab hand so just after some direction before I get the wrong kit's

I've seen some carbon fibre skin kits, can these be painted over will it look shite?

Thanks chaps.

I may be talking out my butt here, But if Eddie Stobart can have all them trucks wrapped in vinyl, With all the curves etc that they have, surely it's not impossible to Wrap a bike tank! And i know that Carbon Fibre effect vinyl has been available for a while now! Is that not a cheaper/Better option??????

These do a 2.5ltr kit which is about right

They also do the mold release wax

wrap is not what I'm looking for sorry.

I'm not after carbon fibre effect either tbh, it will be paint matched to a Repsol orange fairing that's turning up.

Don't know if I could get wrap of a small amount colour matched? or if its okay with petrol drips

The tank has damage to it from an earlier crash, dont want to get the tank sprayed or mended, just want to make a skin / cover that could be transferred to anther bike / tank easily in the future

actually looking into that wrap might be a lot cheaper, that's if I dont wombles it up,

going to see if there are any boy racer type places near me that stock some as I'm guessing these are the places to go for it, i would have to take a fairing panel to see if its a close match tho

seen them on ebay but never know what the actual colour is going to look like in person

I need to get it to match or as close to the orange here

Remember, if you go for the wrap you will at least have to repair the damage to the tank.....

I would suggest you find a local company that wrap cars etc

They will let you know if its easy/possible etc and they will probably have some that you can buy

See what they say

Get a Baglux tank cover as the work and skills needed to make a GRP tank cover from scratch is quite ambitious if you haven't got the experience.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Not into them Wicky mate if I'm honest, dont think there will be a good match for the Repsol orange either, I shall give the Fibreglass ago if nothing else it will be experience

Found this good video of making a mould / skin using fibreglass looks fair simple here, might be a bitch pulling it off the tank tho with the lumps at the side of the tank
