New Bike? Am I mad to part with the Storm?

Post by JohnD »

Hello helpful VTR peeps

I have had a lot of help and advice from this site over the years, and once again I'm turning to you all for guidance...

After 6 delightful years with my 1997 Storm I am thinking it's time for a change.... but what?

I LOVE my Storm... the engine is a peach, has never let me down apart from CCT's once, but that now fixed with manuals. It handles excellently now that I have sorted front forks and got a Maxton shock set up for my weight etc. The wife likes the pillion seat, and we do a fair bit of touring on it. I can embarrass sports bikes on track days. The noise is fantastic with race pipes. The list goes on.... however something in me tells me it's time for a change......

Have tried Aprilia Tuono and a 2003 RSV1000r. Tuono didn't make me go wow, but I was VERY tempted by the RSV... but thankfully lost interest after I heard about all the horror stories about electrics, sprag clutch failure etc

Really I just want an SP1/2, but the wife is gonna hate the pillion seat! KTM superduke looks fun but totally impractical too!

I can't possibly afford to keep two bikes.

What shall I do? Any ideas?

My mate suggests I should consider an IL4.... K1/2/3 GSX-R750 or early 2000 R1 perhaps? But I'm not really feeling it!?!?

Any ideas?

the KTM 990SMT could be the one bike to do it. it can do everything, it has a great engine and suspension and it has all the madness of the supermoto lurking under the skin.

My mate has one, and to watch him pulling mile long wheelies when he is 2 up with a topbox shows it fun and practical sides working in harmony. I enjoy riding it, and if I had not got the storm and all my time, parts and emotion invested in it, I would consider getting one

First dibs on your storm if you do sell it! Struggling to find a good one.

Have you looked at an Aprilia sl1000? They seem to be quite solid bikes. A more practical Tuono. I have been looking it getting one myself.

KTM990 SMT is out of my price range unfortunately.... but yes they do look to be able to do it all !!!

Aprilia SL1000 Falco - yes have considered this before.... but it's Italian, and essentially the same engine/electrics as the RSV so I reckon it would be prone to the same problems (anyone have any experience of these?)

Yes perhaps I should just get an SP and be done with it !?!?! What are they like 2-up :eek2

Hmmmm.....

Mate, I`ve owned pretty much all of the bikes that you have mentioned here at one time or another, and most recently a Tuono, and I can honestly say that the reason you`re in such a dilemma as to what to get next is because you`ve already got it !!

The Firestorm is a GREAT bike mate, as it can do absolutely EVERYTHING you need it to, as you have pointed out.

Instead of swapping it, why don`t you perhaps spend some money on it instead; new suspension, cans, brakes, even a paint job maybe, just to freshen it up for you ?

Don`t get me wrong, you`ve mentioned some excellent bikes there, but I don`t think you`ll gain anything from any of them over the Storm.

Perhaps the only one I could suggest, if you do want to spend that much, is the new(ish) V4 Tuono ? Now I`ve not ridden one of these, but they`re supposed to be a superb road-tool that`ll do everything you need, and more.............bit like the Storm really, but just a bit more maybe ?

Anyway, have fun test-riding, and good luck with your choice, whatever it may be....... 8)
