Who would use "black box insurance" with their bike?

Post by Wicky »

AA to launch sat-nav tech tracked insurance policy

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16969509
The system involves the installation of a small black box into the driver's car which records how they drive.

The measures include monitoring speed, braking severity, cornering and the types of roads used during certain times of day.

This information is transmitted remotely to the insurers, and can also be accessed by users via a website which gives information on overall performance, warning them if they are likely to be moved to a higher premium....

Extreme speeds would be greeted with "a stern email" to the driver.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

not a chance, all that evidence would be used against you in the event of a claim, its hard enough to remain undetected breaking the law on a bike as it is (not that i have or would condone such behaviour). personally i am sick of being watched day in day out as it is with every means they already have to detect your whereabouts let alone not only volunteering for another one but paying for the privilege.

also i would imagine in the case of a criminal investigation by police they could obtain all the information they have and probably use it to turn 5p into 50p (usually accompanied your eyes watering)

It would appear Big Brother has arrived.

We must do all in our power to thwart him at every turn.

I wouldn't want it on my bike BUT for my 17 year old son in his first car! If it means him paying a reasonable price for insurance instead of over £2k I thinks it would be great!

I only read it recently and it really did freak me out, I was reminded earlier of the news changing thing, I saw on a blog a print screen that someone took of a before and after of a news website where they had only mad subtle changes but those subtle changes made it sound completely different.

P.S sorry for the thread hi-jack, but anyone who has not read it really should, its free to read online here http://www.george-orwell.org/1984

my job was brilliant until they fitted a tracker in my van. now it is linked to a performance management system and job is now sh1t.

if the insurance co is fitting it it will only be to assist them in not paying out claims

that's EXACTLY what they want.....

you think it's a good idea for your kid, so don't oppose it....
he never knows anything different, so it's normal for him....

in 17 years time when his kids are driving, it'll be law for everyone.

same thing happened with kids toys. when my kids were little, bobby on the beat was dixon of dock green type.
the police toys they played with were all paramilitary police, basically army toys but blue instead of green. body armour, guns, armoured vehicles etc.....
i said at the time they're being conditioned to think that's normal.
now they're teenagers and the police look exactly like the toys they used to play with as toddlers.......

I know what they want BIG BROTHER but with the rip off insurance cost for new drivers it could save a small fortune.

I might be looking at things from a different angle with young drivers. After 25 years in the fire service having to clear up the mess on the roads the BIG BROTHER black box could realy stop ther teenagers killing themselves if they know that "fast bad driving" is going to hit them in the pocket.

I'll give an example that came to court last year. The teenage male driver got sent down for 5 plus years.
There was him and a male front seat passenger and 3 teenage girls in the back of his new mini. ( the mini is built to carry 4 people/onle 4 seat belts) The driver was showing off on the A12 east london. He lost control hit a kirb and then at tree. The first point of contact on the tree was about 6 foot off the ground.
Result was 3 dead girls and a front seat passenger still not recovered. The accident was 3.5 years ago.

Should the black box be the law for new drivers?

I DON'T THINK IT SHOULD BE THE LAW FOR EVERYONE.

These things do get you thinking don't they!

But for each one of those, there are 100 new drivers who don't mis-behave, because they have some common sense and they were brought up properly, so to "bug" then all as a matter of course would be wrong.

The police would really be happy they knew where everyone was, had their DNA and probably could track then by the microchip installed at birth. Crime clear up rate would be fantastic, but not for me thank you. I am not a number. I am a middle aged man who has just opened a rather nice bottle or French red.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Unfortunately those 100 careful drivers are still pay through the nose for insurance because of that one mad/bad driver.

I DON'T REALY KNOW THE ANSWER! :confused
I guess like any dad I worry and posibly worry a bit more because of the job I do. I would like to think that my son is in the 100 new drivers that do behave. He has never given me a reason to think other wise.
What I do know is that we (london fire brigade) are heavily involved in the Safe Drive Stay Alive project. This involves getting every year 10- 15 year old pupil in havering to the local theater for a very hard hitting road safety event involving all 999 services and RTA victims and their families. Judging by the feadback the mesage is hitting home!

It is difficult. There is no one answer.

Many moons ago, you couldn't afford a car till you were older anyway, so you took the bus. Now there are no buses (in rural areas I mean). That said, I remember my first car and going out with my mates in it. It was a Moggy 1000 convertible. Worth a fortune now, but that's another story.

It would do 65 after a run up of about 1 mile. At 55, she was happy, we were happy and it felt like we were doing the ton. Cars and bikes are so much faster now.

Perhaps raise the driving and drinking age to 21/22? Like you, I don't know. At 17 I thought I was quite grown up. Had a job, had a car. Now I look at them and think "you look so young!" :D

As a father of 2 teenage girls, my biggest fear is that they are the back seat passengers in the scenario described above.......so I am devided on my opionion.

1) I want young lads to to stop driving with their pricks.........black box lets me sleep at night when my girls are out!
2) I cant see how any 18yr old can afford insurance anymore, so this gives them an option.........even if they sell their soul to the Big Brother slippery slope!
3) For me...........NEVER...........but then I must be a hypocrite.....I dont want young lads speeding, but it is OK for me to excercise my judgement as to when and where it might be appropriate to "make progress"........what makes me so clever, I bet even the young lads think they have good judgement and are great drivers / riders!
4) it is the start of big brother.............next thing we know the black box will be linked to your bank card, and if you are speeding it will debit your account, so when you get home you will be bankrupt.

so 2 good things, and 2 very bad things
