Has anyone here ever owned/used one or those motorcycle towing devices that bolts onto the towbar mount and holds the front wheel, leaving the rear to roll along the ground?
And are they any good for transporting your pride and joy??

No, just don't like the idea but if you do I'd take the chain off.

safest bet is total lift. If you have a tow ball fitted to the cage, what's stopping you picking up a cheap bike trailer.

Re: Towbar Trailer Thingy
Just type "trailer" into ebay, there's loads on there, and if you get one with tatty woodwork you can just bolt a section of channel down the middle.
Not tried one of the types you describe, but should be ok, suggest that you lube the chain before towing, and push the rear caliper to make sure that the pads aren't contacting the disc. How far is ok? I'd say:
A few miles to a local repairer/dealer would be fine, off to the south of France less so.
If nothing else you'll flat spot your rear tyre in a few hundred miles.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Nothing really, its just another thing to find storage space for, that will rarely get used.
And anything that looks half decent isn't exactly cheap. I kind of agree with what your saying though.
