Top Trumps - New Version (kind off)!

Post by boz »

Just been out admiring my mates new BMW 320i. Was winding him up a bit though by saying that BMW cars (and bikes) have no "soul"; they are characterless and sterile, more about the engineering than the experience of living with it. He disagreed with a lot of profanities to boot.
Anyway, he also has a Blade. I just gave him a shot of my Storm round the block after he decided to retaliate by questioning its greatness......back he comes with a grin on his face! However, he knows his bikes and said he wouldn't own one as "it doesn't know what kind of bike it is and its got too much wrong with it". I put him straight by pointing out that yes it is flawed in a lot of ways, but that is what makes it what it is. I compared it to a Lancia or Alfa Romeo, also inherently flawed but simply brilliant (according to Clarkson, you can't be a true petrol head unless you've owned an Alfa (I had a Alfasud back in the eighties, simply blinding but crap in equal measure but it never failed to entertain).

Is the comparison between the Storm and the Lancia/Alfa a fair one, or does the Storm remind you of another model car in terms of the overall living experience, vulnerability, flaws, smile value, image etc etc etc

What other bikes do you think should be paired with other cars in terms of the above agenda?

I always think the Storm compares to any TVR up to about 10yrs ago.

All engine, great noise, old school technology, can go very well in the right hands, no electronic aids, bit sparce on equipment, owners love them, appeals to the older more eccentric owner who loves to tinker, and the yellow ones were faster :D

so he rides it, comes back grinning and comes out with some crap?

seems to me that he DOESNT know his bikes aside from a collective of pub talk and really likes your storm but to save face would rather slate it.

Although I do feel a bit out of my depth on here sometimes being in the sub 30 age category...since I've had mine, alot of my friends have reconsidered/changed the kind of bike they like/want/own. Most were into plastic-fantastic all out sports bikes, whereas more of them seem to be content with something a bit more "relaxed" now.

Guess it could be my influence with the Storm, the austere times we are enduring or they just fancy something a bit more sensible :confused

I think it comes down to usability. The reason I bought a Storm was I wanted something that was different that a 600 4cyl but went as well or better. I could have bought a R1, but I would have have to have held myself back or found that I didn't have the skill or road to ride it full on.

Lots of people fool themselves and never actually fully use there bikes.

Just because people can afford a technically better bike doesn't mean they have the skill or a race track to use it on.

Yes, except the batteries last longer in my model car.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
