Brake upgrade

Post by karenvtr »

Hi guys n gals, Chris here hacking our karen's account yet again ... After recent events im after making some more mods to Kaz's VTR. She isnt happy with the brakes, she says there spongy and fade over a long ride out.

Im gonna change the fluid and pop some decent pads in but wondering if a decent cash investment would help. Many of the lads on the zx9 forum swear by Black shadow discs and they have them listed @ £199 for the 3 on the Firestorm http://blackshadow-uk.com/Honda.aspx

Its alot of money but if its going to improve the standard brakes then maybe worth spending. How do you guys get on with the OE set up ? Has anyone got any tips/mods they can share ?

Cheers every one.

Chris

still got standard lines on mine atm - all i did was change the master cylinders and fit ebc hh pads.
the difference is astounding.
it now stops as good (or better tbh) than the sp1

the back brake works as well - since i fitted rear sets with a different rear master cylinder.
the rear one has a larger piston, the fronts the same - iirc they now have a 14mm piston in the mc rather than a 12.
when i first went out with the new pads & new mc's it felt like someone had thrown a 3x2 between the spokes lol, first stoppie i'd done on the storm!

thats with standard hoses, standard discs, standard calipers... just different mc & pads.
and stripped and cleaned the calipers - found on the front left, only one piston was moving, and front right 3 were moving.

so main thing is imo, regular maintenance on the calipers to make sure all is good & moving freely... bleed them properly ( thats the cause of your spongyness) and fit some decent pads.

nothing wrong with the storm brakes as long as you look after them.

like on the zx's with 6 pots - some say theyre shite.... no theyre not. you just need to look after them more as there are more pistons to maintain.

the master cylinders i fitted btw are from a 27year old cbx750 which just shows you dont have to spend a fortune on the latest stuff.
the storm bars are 22mm so most mc''s will fit.... i just tried the cbx ones as an experiment, mainly for the looks and also to see if they would clear the fairing without cutting it with vfr bars... (they do)
