Insurance for modified bike

Post by Styler4077 »

Hi all,
I am looking for some insurance for the modified VTR I have brought ( CBR front end and VFR rear end)
Plus I want a multibike insurance policy if possible.
CN is whom I with now and they want another £33 for 44 days insurance on a std Storm.
Currently I pay around £400 for three bikes worth £12,000 about £11 per bike per month fully insured as is my riding kit and full european breakdown cover.
They will insure the bike on a separate policy, can't see them refusing to insure any modified bike as they run the modified section at the NEC show every November.... For a price...........

Could you guy with modified bike who have told your insurance company about the mods recommend a company?

Cheers for any help want to get out on the bike at the weekend.

This should be an intersting thread. I have never insured a highly modified/custom bike before but most insurance accept modified exhausts, jet kits etc.

I know Carole Nash are very good and where one of the few companies that would insure me when I was couriering. Insurance is a bit like betting, but instead of odds it's price. Anything can be insured for the right price!

Some of us on here may need an extra A4 sheet to list our mods.  It could be easier for them to to insure as a custom. There's got to be insurance companies that specialise in custom bikes.

Some/a lot insurance companies will NOT insure bikes that have modification over Stage 1, Paint job or Exhausts.

I tried to insure my Triumph speed four with the suspension linkage mod done to lower the bike ( I am a short ass ) but I got knocked back, my insurance company ( bennets ) said it would invalidate my insurance.

Carol nash, footmen james are what a lot of Harley owners use to insure their Harleys and Harley get heavily modified most of the time.

OK so who's got a
CBR front end and has told their insurance company?
A VFR rear end and told them?

I've only ever told CN about my exhausts, not the luggage rack, double bubble screen, CBR clutch and MC, note any of the other bits and bobs, like most people I assume ?

I would recommend trying Footman james. I have all the bikes insured with them including 3 with agreed value. This includes the CBX Special I built and they don`t come a lot more non standard

Sorry to Styler4077 for sidetracking the thread. What I should add is that last year to insure all 10 bikes with Footman James was just less than £400 fully comp with all the usual legal, breakdown etc.
They know all about the mods done but as with most insurance companies (I believe) as long as the mods are not performance related (big bore, turbo etc) it shouldn`t have a great effect on the premium.

I hope you have got full legal cover. What was the cause of your claim or should I say what did the other person do to you? Was there much damage? And I hope you was not physically hurt too. You should keep us all informed to how it all goes. Fingers crossed for you.

With regards to Mods and Insurance, it's only the times like BSM is going through when they will check to see if your bike is exactly as you say it is. So anyone that does not mention mods, especially performance related! when/if it does come to a claim, the insurance will possibly be able to wiggle out of it. Or even claim your insurance to be void.

thanks carl
16 mths ago i was knocked off by a van driver, he denies responsebility, i ended up with a helicopter ride to hospital, a few nights in intensive care, followed by 3 more weeks in hospital, i'm only just getting back to work properly, its not been a great period in my life, and the police tried to prosocute me for riding without due care and attention, it was thrown out by the cps 4 days before court, because they had no evidense, basically because i had done nothing wrong, the stress it put me under was immense, i actually cried when i read the letter saying it had been thrown out of court. you really don't realise the pressures you are under.
things are looking better now, i still live day to day with my injuries, and i still have to take tablets, but i'm happy because me and my bike are about to get together again, my only worry is will my body be able to handle the abuse from the bike, i've had a couple of 5 min rides around a trading estate and i feel fine, but thats not the same as a couple of hours is it. fingers crossed all goes well, from my experience i would tell everybody to get fully comp if they can afford it, trust me for the sake of a 100 quid or so it's worth it, i found out the hard way.........
i'm looking forward to having some rideouts with fellow forum members in the very near future, starting with the essex workshop day in april......
