There's no replacement for displacement

Post by seb421 »

there's no replacement for displacement....

has any body bored out a Firestorm to fit larger piston's before?

if you was to go to 1100cc or 1200cc how much power could you gain?

Not heard of any bored out 'Storms but why not look at lightened/forged pistons instead?

Probably cheaper and more reliability in the long run.

However I would like to hear any info on boring out the engine.

I thought there was a performance shop in Germany that offered a 1200cc (or close to it) kit although I have never heard of anyone running one. My apprehension at such a move would be that those in the know say the bore can't be expanded much beyond 2mm or so, which means you have to rely on stroking to get more displacement. THis means shorter rods (again, some with opinions claim the VTR is already dealing with borderline overly short rods as it is). Not sure how it would all add up......

I can vouch for the merits of high compression, however,.... :biggrin

Surely to get more displacement you'd need LONGER rods and bores?
Also cam chains....

And as the heads are now higher, even more chopped out of the tank...
The sleeves are pretty thin, a MM or maybe two looks possible but you'd run the risk of cylinder wall distortion. 1mm isn't really worth the bother and expense.

Nope, high comp pistons and cams are the way to go at first, if that won't be enough try standard pistons with a head gasket spacer and turbo and/or nitro.
Head work always helps, as does a big bore system.

Although it might be possible to machine the cases and re-sleeve.... clearance might be an issue, though.

But for the money spent, p/ex it for an SP1/2.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I also remember a company who advertised a 1200cc conversion sometime ago. I'm not sure now how they managed to get this.
