catching on turn over

Post by stu9000 »

my 1999 vtr kina catches when idling every once in a while. It feels like the clutch plate half engaging. I dont think its a real problem because my Honda dealer told me its a characteristic of all vtr's. does anyone else get it? Does anyone know what actually is happening?

Just read this from another thread

"This problem seems like the standard VTR idle-clunk-die problem.
Usually rectified by getting the carbs balanced and turning the idle speed up slightly".

I am a bit overdue on my 15 thou mile service so perhaps I do need balancing. It only happens very occasionally so I wont mess with the idle speed.

Any mention of the CCT makes a VTR owner a bit nervous. My previous owner said he had it replaced. Were BOTH replaced though? Must go check the service manual.

No one seems to have offered an explanation of what actually causes the "idle clunk die" problem though. Anyone fancy having a go?

your service is at 16,000 miles and it's the big one, valve clearances on top of the usual. Probs about £500 at the main dealer.
