Nellie's Dell Enduro and Alton green lanes

Post by geodude »

Wow. What an absolutely fooking awesome day of riding. Totally outside my comfort zone, extremely challenging, slippery, wet, muddy but fun!

I set off at 8:30 Saturday morning to meet up with a fellow member of the TRF (Trail Riders Fellowship) who I had ridden with before. (See Hampshire Byways with Kev & Steve 24.03.12) We were meeting up with a couple of others to make our way to Nellie's Dell near Loomies.

Nellie's Dell is private land that a member of the Southern TRF uses regularly to set up an enduro style course for its members. It’s in woodland, has a bomb hole and an old railway embankment.

The weather (13c) when we set off was perfect for a day in the forest throwing motorcycles around. It's hard work so anything hotter would be, well, hot.

As we reached Corhampton, it started to rain. As we got closer to Loomies, the rain started to get heavier and heavier. It was now very wet. Heading into Nellie's Dell, and not knowing what to expect, I started to get a little worried. We arrived at Nellie's and the track to get to everyone was muddy. Very muddy. Back end sliding everywhere on the slightest throttle movement type muddy. You with me?

I was having a chat with Kev who had a look of terror on his face as he just heard Colin who is pretty handy on the dirt mentioned just how slippery it was out there. Gulp!! We paid our subs, signed the waiver and we were set.

Kev was telling me about the format of riding and mentioned there was a bomb hole where you could go and mess about. “Great, lets go” I said.

There was about 15 of us I think. Colin asked who wanted to go round. I said “Me!” we got ready to set off around the course. Did I mention it was slippery and muddy and a challenge? Well just in case I didn’t, it was.

We headed down a hill and round into the woods winding in and out of the trees. We eventually come up against a high embankment and were expected to go up it? I had already heard about this and asked if there was a short cut and fortunately there was. So I wussed out on the first lap, and the second but finally managed to pluck up the courage to do it on the third lap. Woohoo! I almost go flying into a fence post mind, but I did it.

The laps were hard and I needed to stop after each one and rest. Its great for building fitness though and I just wish there were more of these events.

After lunch we headed out to ride some of the local green lanes. All in all it was a fantastic day.

PS: Road riding is just not the same anymore!! lol

What a great way to spend a wet day  Looks like a trials bike might have worked better there, as there was not a lot of grip.

Reminded me why I don't like 4 stroke off roaders, they are too much energy to start

Loved every minute of it. I didn't mind the wet and mud but do hope the next one is a little dryer. I might be tempted to play more in the bomb hole.

Its weird as the DR is a bitch to start when hot as you know but as the day goes on, it gets easier to hot start. At the start of the 3rd video (up soon) you hear the surprise in my voice when she kicks over 1st time. lol

Byways
  1. Colin takes us along some of the local byways
  2. Within a minute of setting off, a bit of mud lands on the lens ruining the shot for nearly 10 minutes
  3. You get to see mud and puddles
  4. Steve can't wait to get off the main road onto the byways.
