Renthal bars...HELP PLEASE

Post by Tiny_TomLeighton »

Rob

I do respect your 30 years experience, and yes I'm a beginner. We are all beginners at some point.

But you didn't really offer me any help there did you. You basically said my terminology was wrong and that choosing renthal bars was for gays and tarts.

Hence the response you got from me.

Maybe a less aggressive response with helpful tips and advice would of been a better introduction between us.

I will say those pics you posted do look good, not what I'm trying to achieve but cool none the less.

and i will concede i'm fighting a loosing battle re the correct usage of terminology....

my storm going back together with R1 running gear, drag bars etc. not what i'd call a streetfighter, but hey ho.
Image

it looks a lot different now, lol.

i'm a similar size to you, slightly shorter, similar weight. i found the std storm bloody uncomfortable after a while, bars too low, pegs too far forward.
i wasn't convinced that the VFR750 bar option would raise the bars enough, so i went for 2" risers and drag bars. if i'd kept the fairing i would've had to trim it near the mirror mounts for clearance. throttle cables and all hoses were standard. i think i re-routed the throttle cables slightly.

Ello
If you are keeping the fairing then use Renthal 758 - 01 ultra low street fighter bars and risers that are also low and angled back.It is best to weld the risers on after drilling the mounting holes and fitting the nuts.I think You can just get by with the standard throttle cable but you will have to source the hydraulic pipes .The bars feel very nice. All you need can be found on Ebay.

Seeing all the history lessons going I'll throw in my tuppence.Street fighters were originally bikes that had been dropped and the poor sod who was up to his neck in H.P. had to get it back on the road for work in a hurry and could not afford the bits .Riding around like this actually felt embarrassing until some dudes thought it was cool and done deliberate.

You may live to regret that statement when rob comes back to the forum. Good luck....

no they bloody wern't!!!!

those wern't 'streetfighters', they were just bikes that had been dropped and had the damaged fairings removed... happened in the 80's, still happens now.
they wern't streetfighters then, and they arn't now.

maybe you missed it first time round... (and second)...
rob... wrote:
........ maybe a bit of historical context wouldn't go amiss, from someone who was there at the time, and involved in building them....

streetfighters evolved in the UK in the mid 80's as a b8stard offspring of 'diggers' and drag bikes.

diggers were a style of chop/low rider from So Cal that grew in the late 70's/early 80's. long, low, clip ons, rear sets, tuned harley or big Zed motors and loadsa metalflake....
Image
Image

this style was crossed with the 'hard as nails' look of the drag bike
Image

and came about primarily from the launch of the 'hyper-sports' bikes from japan in the mid '80's. people used to riding Z650's and CB750's suddenly found themselves on GSXR750's, and then in casualty, and the bike ended up in a breakers, which was good news for people like me who took the motors, wheels and forks and bunged them into modified old british rigid chop frames, thus creating the new 'streetfighters'.... we tuned the motors with the only available stuff at the time; drag race parts.
a streetfighter is all about aggressive looks and performance, not bling.
Image
Image

so, a streetfighter should have a megga tuned motor, look aggressive as f*ck, and be rigid.
quite how, and why, the term came to be hijacked by the gay, tarts handbag, renthals and twin spots brigade is a mystery, and a source of imense frustration.

sports bikes with no fairings and motocross bars are not streetfighters. if blinged up with fancy suspension, a tarty paint job and a tuned engine, they could conseivably be 'performance customs', otherwise they're just a bike with the fairing removed, trying to be something they're not. much, i suspect, like the riders.

yes, that was much more comfy than standard, (for me). that incarnation had the standard clocks mounted low behind the headlight.

the swingarm pivot bits and the mounting support 'ears' are done, just need some mill time to do the footpeg bit.

correct history is important, look at the bullshit spouted these days about WWII and hitler.......

As regards the OP.....Honda CB400 Super 4 top yokes fit straight on with no mods. This allows you to keep that standard honda look (with honda badge on the yoke ) and have the hole pre drilled for you to allow for risers to bolt through

Aldo, it just so happens that I have a tatty spare one
Snoogle, any news on those yokes you might have buddy? I'm interested in them if you still have them.
