Learn from Seb's MOT experience

Post by boz »

After reading through Seb's recent post on his unfortunate MOT failure (with repair bills), I am kinda concerned now. I'm thinking if someone with more experience than me could get caught out, I'm fooked.
My very first Storm MOT is Friday. I haven't had too much bad luck with my bikes in the past, mainly because I never keep them long enough, but this one is for keeps for the foreseeable. I do need some time however to sort some larger repairs out if they come out.
Anyway, I have checked out as much as I can by reading through fellow Stormers experiences but I don't want to forget the obvious....the silly things which can fail you (Like not having your windscreen washers full on your car etc etc).
I don't know the tester so I've got to assume he is an officious git! Anyway, the bike seems to check out OK. Tyres, fluids, exhausts, leaking fluids etc.
Can anyone contribute some tips to areas where Storms are susceptible to failing so I can re-check before Friday.
Thanks all as always

I'd take a look at the brakes, most people miss worn discs or craking around the holes

your mot station should do a pre mot check which will flag any obvious problems. you can always ride your bike out of a mot station and take it to someone else to do the repairs or to get a second opinion. the worst thing a mechanic can do is, do the work without your consent and when you turn up, hand you a large bill for your troubles......

As somebody said earlier book it in 2-3 weeks earlier before the MOT expires so you''ve got time to fix anything that need fixin, and if need be to borrow a bike and still be insured.

Check all leccy things, headlight alignment, sidelight, horn etc. brake pads, head bearings, wheel and swing-arm bearings etc.

Problem is Seb was aware that something was up down below in the linkage dept a month earlier but chose to ignore it until pointed out at the MOT :sad2 :eek2

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

I have a receipt for works 'carried' out, he told me that the linkage was a fail etc when it was down as an advisory,
i knew it was wearing but wasn't wombles, and it was an advisory not a fail, he also said the front wheel bearings was wombles, these are not down on the fail, and they had only been 'replaced' 5 k ago by the same people.
Motorway use 5k shouldn't have shagged the bearings if they had been replaced.
The steering head bearings are made up rubbish, these was not mentioned and there was no issues and they are not down on the receipt, if i knew the shock was an advisory not a fail i would have got the work work carried out else where. i also was not given the MOT refusal sheet

I'm in the process of dealing with VOSA over this, i believe he is trying to extort money out of people

Good luck with any appeal Seb, dirty thieving bollock heads. Thanks for the info, that was a big help as I aint checked my chain or brake fluid levels. See what I mean by missing the simple things!
The discs are OK as the other advice given. I'm just really up tight about the bike right now as I'm so broke.....if I got any more broke I'd be rich! I just logged on to the MOT handbook to go through it all again.
The MOT is 3 weeks in advance of mine running out and the test place do not do repairs so hopefully there is no conflict of interest there. I will bare your experience in mind though.

your well within your rights to refuse to pay for the work carried out or for the parts, you can tell them to refit the old parts and return the bike to how you brought it in.

I have done this in the past, they MUST ask your permission to do the work and provide you with an estimatad bill before you agree to work being carried out.

Get some free legal advice Seb. Lets hope VOSA investigate and if things look dodgy you may have to go down the small claims direction.

Boz Don't forget the rear reflector, numberplate (legal) and light. All hangers and things are tight.

Good luck with the MOT mate

Just to confirm...you DON'T need a numberplate light for the mot.

Cheers everyone for the input. Have checked it and had someone else go over her again so fingers crossed. Got a lot of runs planned for the next 2 weeks and I really need my bike for them
Just did a 300 mile run with 2 other Storms and despite the weather it was the dogs. The bike is simply superb.

has it now come to the point where dealing with any one official, it pays to recored the conversation with a small hidden device . At least you can play back what was originally said to you . I think a lot of mp3 players can now do voice recording.

I do this to cover yourself now a days.

That's probably a good idea pariah, but I'm not sure how that would hold as evidence in a court situation. Normally the devices that are used have to be a certain kind that record date, time etc and be of a certain quality, and to be approved for evidence gathering. It's like those tape decks the fuzz use when doing an interview!

Have Fun.
