Lightweight Wheels

Post by bassman »

Joining my first forum ever - it feels like, hmmm, slipping my Pirellis on a wet drain cover. So after posting a forum question to myself (Duh) can anyone offer me advice on fitting lightweight wheels to my 2003 Storm? I have an Ohlins rear shock and front spring conversion and was wondering if the claims of massive unsprung weight for faster turning and acceleration are actually true. Any recomendations for road and the odd track day.
Good to see the Storm is still popular as ever - I thought it had been buried by most!

Don't think you will find too many Firestorm's on the road with lightweight wheels...
Sounds like you have a pretty nice set up already anyway, Mr. Ohlins!
Apart from directing you to the usual manufacturer sites I can't tell you anything either... except for 'WELCOME' on board

Dunno about Storm, but...

One of colleagues of mine changed wheels on his Hornet 900. Result - bike much easier to flip, but he complained that on high speed motorways it does not feel so assuringly stable anymore. He says it turns def. more quickly, and actually ride comfort has not suffered (bumps-wise), but also he experience a bit more "weave" on profiled by heavy trucks road....
Ah, and yeah - it costs a fortune! :)
BTW - judging by nickname - Nare you by any chance ex-Horneteer from Hornet's Nest?

Lightweight wheels

Thanks for the welcomes - what a friendly bunch :D You hear so many harp on about the benefits of lightweight wheels and I thought someone must have fitted a set to a storm. So all advice greatly received.
Couple of other points. Err no I'm not an ex-Hornet rider ...
And I've seen a couple of people ask about cans etc so here's my bit. Popped on a set of Remus Grand Prix ally cans and got a clean 117bhp plus extra torque. So they definitely work and are not too noisy. The dyno guy then popped on a dynojet kit and the graph went haywire - a very poor result -less power, rougher curve. He said this had happened only on one other bike an R6 (I think). No conclusions there, just my experience.
Any feelings on old storm versus new storm? I've owned both and the motors felt very different to me but everyone tries to convince you they are the same.
That'll do for now
cheers.
