whats the highest wattage headlight bulb

Post by agentpineapple »

i'm looking to replace my headlight bulb, i'm not going mad, but i was wondering whats the highest wattage bulb you can use without having heat issues, i've seen some nice bulbs offering a good improvement in light, but they're around the 55/60w, is that to must, i don't want to go as far as the eastern beaver mod....
any info is welcomed

Eastern Beaver mod is cheap and easy Marty. The stock wiring does not allow you to fully harness the light of any bulb you use. I am running the EB harness along with a Hella 100/55 bulb, this gives me big lighting for the boonies (far away from the city where you need it, but also when you are moving quickly enough for the airflow to cool everything down, thereby avoiding any heat-related issues). Around town and in traffic, I run on the 55 (low beam, stock wattage) so I get decent lighting (thanks to EB harness) and no heat issues.

Hope this helps....

+1 on what Mik is using.

not worth putting higher wattage in unless you sort out the high resistance wiring that goes through the LH handlebar switch.

and keeping dip beam near to the 55 or 60w level will keep you legal and prevent any heating issues

cheers lads, i was just wondering if i could go from a 35 to a 55 without to many issues, as i said i don't want to go mad, just something a little bit better than standard, i find the clearer the light the more noticable you are to other road users....

Marty i use this one mate

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_246903

Its fine for me, and most my riding is at night and a fair bit down unlit roads too

I've had a HID kit fitted in the past, not the proper retro fit projector style just a bulb and ballast one, it was mega bright i mean mega bright but it did blind the wombles out of every one, i was ignorant to it at first as didn't want to believe it, but it did.

How about these as a straight swap Marty

It might be worth looking into the Phillips bulbs as well. They do a similar thing that supposedly gives you a brighter clearer light.

Have Fun.

if you have a 35W headlight fitted, then you have a problem, it should be 55W dip and 60W main..........hope it is a typo, otherwise you must have the worst lights ever in the world of Firestorms, And Firestorms have the worst lights especially with standard forks, cause when you touch the barkes the light beam is only 20 yrds infront of you! [unless like me you have a 1976 125 with 6V electrics, then the Standard Forestorm is just a bit better]

I was thinking the same thing Al, unless of course Marty did buy that twin headlamp conversion, as iirc that has two 35W bulbs :eh:

just be carefull for condensation with those lloydy m8... i had he 130s in mine and they made condensation when i was at the lights etc.... this collects in the bottom of the lamp and then gets thrown onto the biulb and breaks it, as well as messing the reflector up.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
