will a 190 tyre help me

Post by agentpineapple »

since i fitted my 954 front end, and i've also fitted a new rear shock which was built to my ever so svelt weight. the question is my bike now turns very very fast which isn't a bad thing but i wish it turned a little slower, making it a little more stable.
so by fitting a 190 rear tyre would it slow the turn in down a bit?????
all suggestions are welcome.....even the ones suggesting i should lose weight

It would slow the initial turn it a little but then it drops in as normal I have found .
Have you got a spacer in the rear shock ?
If you have it would be best to remove it .
Can you not raise the front a little ?
Have you had weighted fork springs fitted ?
If not as you are on the large side the forks might be compressed to much giving a quicker turn in .

no shock spacer, but the cbr954 forks are shorter than storm shocks, and they're already set the highest point so theres no chance of adjusting them, the only thing i haven't done is re-spring the forks, i might put some thicker oil in for now, and this winter i'll be putting some k-tech or hyperpro springs in.
my tyres at the mo are mis matched, front michelin pilot sport front and perelli diablo rear, both are part worn and both are standard sizes 120/180
seen as i will be in the market for some new rubber in the next month or so, i thought buying a 190 would slow the bikes turn in a bit making it a bit more stable...

Pre load wont make any difference mate. Does your shock have a ride height adjuster?? if so, lower it a bit.

Trouble is, you have a lower front end ; and if you also have a shock spacer fitted it's standing on its nose, weight distribution is front biased.
Normally I'd suggest removing a shock spacer, possibly your shock has a ride height adjuster; if so use that as well.

But I said trouble is, and what I mean is that you're ending up with a bike lower to the ground, and ground clearance becomes an issue after a while, especially if you are a little heavier than average.

You'll find that the bellypan touches down, normally pegs as well but you have quite high rearsets fitted, so no problem there.

I'd be tempted to try a good set of tyres first, not ones with a quick turn-in. A more rounded profile would suit, rather than a more triangular one. (I mean the tyres).

But if that didn't work, the 190 might be worth a go.

When you get to have a look, make sure that the rear you have already is a 55 ratio sidewall to width, not a 60.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

cheers guys, i certainly don't have a shock spacer, i don't even know what i'm looking for in respect to height adjustment, its a standard hagon shock thats been built to my weight(different spring) so i'm doubting it has height adjustment.
because the shocks quite stiff i don't seem to have any ground clearance issues at the mo. but as tony said having ridden my bike, it is very front biased. i'm getting used to it everytime i go out. i believe my rear tyre has a 55 ratio.
i'm looking at that £135 maxxis supersports that are on ebay, but if i go for the 190 the price rise's to £165 and then i might have hugger clearance issues.....
its all good fun tho

Marty did you set the rear shock to the stock length before fitting? I set my Penske to the same length as the VTR shock, and have the same 954 forks as yourself (with uprated K-tech springs and 10w oil, 100mm air gap). I don't find the turn in of mine over quick and have had no issues with the belly pan touching down.
Not wishing to be impolite in any way but if you have just fitted the standard 954 used front end do you think your, ahem, static sag could be collapsing the front end?

Shouldn't do, mate.
The braced SA will not take a Storm hugger, and the Blade hugger that will fit it comes off a bike with a 190 tyre as standard.

So as long as you fit a Blade hugger it'll clear.
