Kawasaki's Versys is a grass!!
Kawasaki's Versys is a grass!!
Got the new edition of Bike magazine delivered yesterday and had a brief flick through. One article in particular stands out amongst a lot of doom over European directives. The Kawasaki Versys 1000 is fitted as standard with an EDR or Event Data Recorder. This item constantly records information from the bike like Speed, Revs and throttle openings for a specified amount of time but will record it permanently if it detects an accident. Kawasaki say this information will only be revealed after seeking the owners permission OR as a result of a court order, where required by law enforcement, other government authorities or other third parties acting with lawful authority (your insurance company). They also state that some law enforcement bodies already have the equipment to read them.
This little gem was only found by the journo looking through his bikes handbook and isn't emblazoned in capital letters in red ink on the front page but hidden away on page 67. Kawasaki haven't publicised that they have fitted this device, so it obviously appreciates it isn't a selling point.

FFS, this sounds like the start of something very bad, could you imagine cops pulling bikes over randomly and being able to see data about your top speed and when you did it. how long before gps will be attached, and then we're all fooked...........

HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!
Re: Kawasaki's Versys is a grass!!
Yes mate it certainly sets a dangerous presedent.

could be used to " invalidate " your insurance, or in some way become a criminal act to tamper with such systems in the future.leevtr wrote:Theres a business opportunity there, for some clever techy who can bypass the system for a few quid.

I know a lot of public services vehicles have these fitted as a matter of course and prosecutions have been brought on the strength of the information they reveal.

Don't buy a Versy.
Why they not doing this with cars, this black box recorder thingy. Kawasaki have got a fekin nerve.

Kawasaki's Versys is a grass!!
We have them fitted to the work vans
We have lost a fair few good drivers because of it .
And it has made the rest of us even better drivers
smother faster more consistent and more aware of what's around us .
We have 3 boxes fitted to the work vans
1"smart drive"( records video -gps- speed -g'force .
2 vfr . Records everything and I mean everything even when you fart lol
3 tracker .
It won't be long before every new bike/car is fitted with them as standard .

Re: Kawasaki's Versys is a grass!!
I certinally wont buy a vehicle fitted with anything like that, I will keep old crappers on the road without such technology
They may as well restrict the vehicles.
How about a letter to kawaski stating we will not buy anything vehicle fitted with these recording equipment, and get everybody to sign this online letter and give it to Kawasaki?.

Re: Kawasaki's Versys is a grass!!
just got the mag and they reckon that the data can't be accessed unless you give your consent - so
is the point unless it's the thin end of a very fat wedge. That and all the Euro sh1t - takes the shine off the mag.
ps - everyone written to their MP and EuroMP to let them know what you think of all this anti-democratic tinkering and buggering up the bike industry?

Read the article again mate, the data can be accessed without consent if it is to do with law enforcement.

Re: Kawasaki's Versys is a grass!!
unless its a legal requirement to have it you dont have to have i guess?
not sure you would need a high tech approach to by pass it? i would imagine some 6 inch side cutters would suffice.
we have trackers in our vans at work. by law i believe the employer has to make you aware that they are in the vehicle at what data they measure
if your employer tells you they are sticking one in ur van its a good time to start looking for a new job..
