They're rubbish. They make your butt slide off the seat and cause sweating and monkeys finger! They stop aching in one place and cause it in another by simply changing the pressure points. They also do nothing to stop problems with blood circulation which is often the cause of butt fatigue.Gel seats are by far the best. Gel has been used for years on hospital beds for people who are constantly sat or lay in the same position and they've now realised it's a godsend to bikers butts so many bike seat companies are marketing them and they're perfect. They totally stop aching, pins and needles, numbness, sweating, itching, etc. The supreme ones are butt buffer but are expensive but you can get one off ebay like I did for £20.

Those look great for putting under the vinyl if anyone is any good with upholstery and a staple gun.

I'm not a fan of the ones that strap around. Not only do they look ugly, you have to consider what they are like when they get wet. I would think some of them may get a bit soggy or even slide around.

Just a thought.

Hate to disagree - Most hospitals AFAIK use air mattresses for high-risk inert patients. The mattress has alternating pressure so pressure sores/ulcers don't develop where boney points are close to the skin. A bit like sleeping on hovercraft but they do work with earplugs! ;-)

For folk able to sit out in chairs, cushions generally used are foam or air cushioned (or most usually a normal hospital pillow!) - never seen gel cushions used though they are available.

I just use padded cycling shorts on the standard storm seat for long jaunts, + with the breaks that the tank's range affords I haven't had any problems.

I used to be the same(not much meat on't butt but big belly) in my case. Got a black gell pad that covers the top not the sides of the seat,it's great. Busters I think and if you have your seat recovered at some point it could be put inside.

I've tried air ones and gel ones and gel is miles superior. Ref butt buffers they don't slide around when wet as they have the rubber net grip matting underneath and the side grips under the ridge of the seat and stick like glue but the top material can get damp if left in the rain while not riding. I've not tried the insert ones or the ones without the outer material. The air ones I tried (including the one above) were naff though and as they're non-breathable caused all sorts of sweat probs. They also moved around too much. And for all that my butt still ached. Gel was better!

thanks for the info guys .Going to get a nice set of cycle shorts give them a try then source a good seat bloke and get a personalised one done in winter when it gets stored and stripped to be cleaned.
