That's how mine will look when I get it painted but with 3 spokes :-)

I think the white really makes the green ping. The Ford Focus RS green my steplads Suzuki is sprayed in would really look good on the Storm. It's got a real sheen/sparkle to it when the sun's on it.

Thanks for the pics Lloydie.

I reckon on a black Storm, the black frame would look even better!

Next question - Who has had their frame out? and how difficult was it?

If I attempt it myself, I will need to take a digi photo at every step, so I can remember to put everything back

Somebody did post some strip down photo's for removal of frame somewhere. I have searched all over but can't find them. If someone could be so kind to post the link please. As far as difficulty, that depends on ones mechanical skills and what tools and equipment one has. As long as the mounting bolts are not seized it would be a reasonably straight forward job.

The one thing that concerns me about Powdercoating is what happens to the VIN plate riveted on the frame. It's not held in by standard rivets, more like pins. I don't know if this needs removing before the frame is powdercoated and placed in the oven. I would of thought it would melt in the oven as IIRC it's about 200 degrees C. Could anyone shed some light on this? Also what are the pin/rivets called and what tool is needed to attach new ones. I would want to use exactly the same instead of standard rivets as I think it's illegal to tamper with it. So if re attaching, I would want it to look as original as it did before it was removed.

Whatever you end up doing, get lots of photos with witnesses so you have evidence in case you get harassed for changing the plate.
Why not give DVLA a call?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Yep, good point Carl, it's something I hadn't considered.

I contacted Windridge Coatings Ltd and asked them about the point Carl raised, their reply regarding the VIN plate during coating is below -

"Some come off with gentle heat. Some riveted either way it needs to be removed. The early processes are likely to damage it. If it wont come off peacefully then make a record of the information and we will have a go by passing it through our oven assuming it id glued. If we can't remove it then as a last resort contact people like:

Good link, thanks for that. It also opens up the possibility of buying a second frame cheap, getting that sprayed and then swapping over. 8O

You'll still have the stamped in number down the headstock though.

Oh yeh good point. Now if I was a nefarious person. I'm actually suprised that company gets away with selling those plates and the stamps. Notice they wont do the stamping. I'm sure it's illegal and that's their loophole for selling them as they are blank.

I would still like to know what the rivet like pins are called and where they can be purchased. Surly it's just a case of drilling out the old ones, and once the powdercoating is done rivet the plate back on. Oh, I might just end up spraying it myself, might be a lot less hassle in the end.

Try giving them a call or e-mail they should be able to point you in the right direction of a supplier. All the bikes I have restored/rebuilt have had metal decals with the numbers on, Yamaha FS1-E, Suzuki GT250M, TS250M, TS50x.
The headstock stamped in number is a whole different can of worms with each manufacturer now having their own typeface as well. Good powdercoaters will mask off the headstock number so it can still be read easily.
