Lacking power above 5500 rpm

Post by DandyHighwayMan »

Hi,

1st post here, been a lurker just trying to learn about my bike.

I bought it 2 summers ago after a 10 yr break from biking from eBay. Test ride was ok etc, having been away never really gave it proper beans, but I was happy and the deal was done.

My brother in law has a TL1000s in his bike absolutely leaves me for dead after 5k rpm. He's followed me and says my bike sounds flat from behind.

Mine is a 99 year fitted with K&N filter and Remus Grand Prix hi level cans. Also fitted are Renthall sprockets.
Sometimes it stutters on fuelling like its being starved. It's good up to 5k as I said but just doesn't pick up its skirts and take off after that. It will rev out but somewhat pointless after 7.5k as it feels gutless.

I am a mechanical numpty but any ideas would be very much appreciated.

"Stand and deliver, hayaa, your money or your life". Welcome to the forum mate.
It sounds like the filter has been bunged in without any jetting to compensate. Try a standard filter to start with then if that sorts out it's behaviour you can think about fitting a jet kit along with the performance filter, oh and budget some dyno time as well!!!

Lacking power above 5500 rpm

Hiya and welcome!

First questions has to be, has it been rejetted (particularly as they are very sensitive to air filters)? Aside from that you're into plugs and carbs territory I think.

Sounds very similar to what I had when I chucked a K&N in. It was fine with open pipes but NOT with the K&N!

I agree about the K and N air filter as firestorm996 says, but another very good possibility is the valve timing is out 180 degrees.

Chris.

Revving to the redline in neutral is possible with cam timing out 180, but they won't go right to the redline while riding in gear.
Does yours rev out ok (albeit with some stuttering) right to 9?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Or maybe its only running on one cylinder... Or the throttle position sensor is disconnected, or one main jet is blocked, or a torn diaphragm
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Or water in the (usually front) cylinder head recess around the plug, plugs need changing, loose HT lead connection, failing coil under load, water in float bowls, a float with a leak, carbs not seated on their rubbers properly, a small crack in the vac line, contacts need cleaning on ignition module connector, sidestand switch dodgy, kill switch dodgy, or connectors leading to either of these.
All possibilities, but luckily they're all easily and quickly checked.

Whereabouts in the world are you?
Someone local might be able to assist.

Thanks for the replies. I'm based in NW Oxon near Chipping Norton.
It will rev out in gear but put it this way doesn't have enough power to lift the front in 1st or 2nd. Going thru the gears its fairly quick to say 90ish leptons, but over the ton it's not.
There's a whole host off things then that it might be, but nothing definitive. I'll try the K&N 1st and see how that fares.
Thanks

come up to the midlands workshop day on 21st and you can get some comparitive data. I also have a standard honda filter if you need to try one.

surprised no one has suggested that you get it painted yellow, that should bring the top speed back up :Beer Popcorn:
