Spark Plug Spanner

Post by MacV2 »

Mac's top tip......

For those with no standard issue toolkit.......

If you have tried to change plugs & failed as your plug spanner is too short or too fat to fit.

Try this.

Image

Take one 18mm AF box spanner. (The one I used is a spark plug spanner from an unidentified bike tool-kit that I had acquired some years ago.)

Image

Add an extension to it. I have used another box spanner which fitted over the end & then tack welded them together.

Image

This one is just long enough to do the job but works ok but another half an inch in length wouldn't go amiss....Fnerr Fnerr....

I suppose that you could do it with just a bar or long bolt, but you will need to be able to turn it. On the version above the 2nd box spanner has the holes which you put a bar though to turn.

Simple & cheap, have you seen the price that Storm tool-kit's go for on e-bay?

If you don't happen to have an 18mm AF box spanner laying around at home try your local bike shop or breakers.

Nowt like a bit of Blue Peter engineering to solve a problem.

OK yes it does look a bit pants TBH but then it's silver.....

Mac I think it's a great bit of Blue Peter, you just need to cover it in some tissue paper and glitter.

I have a Halfrauds Blue T handled jobbies http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_255216 and it works fine for undoing and tightening, I use my magnetic pick up tool to pull the plug out from the depths.

And then you have these things here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180677125243? ... 1423.l2649

Oh and for anyone reading this thread in the future. Spark plugs have a strange measurement. I believe it's a 12mm spark plug spanner that fits the Storm. But when you look at them, they visually look like a standard 18mm. If you have an 18mm deep socket that has a small circumference this can also be used as an alternative to a plug spanner.

12mm refers to the thread on the ends of the plug, not the AF measurement for the hex part, where the plug spanner grips.

Good bodge, d'you reckon Marty could fake carbon one, for full Bloop Eater Badge status?

It's the Scottish in me.....Where do you think the Mac bit in the username comes from ??

Besides both the box spanners I used were acquired for free so the cost is nun pence & even the welding was free as me neighbour did it & used his electrickery.....

Therefore the £3.99 saved can be spent on a burger...BK not McD's.... Not that I eat either. I'll spend it on fuel instead.

+1 , never buy something if you can make it yourself

Way more satisfying, and it keeps you brain working.....also good preparation for Armageddon...or when the floods stop deliveries to your local halfords :)

So (I'm almost afraid to ask) what do you do with them instead?

Just avoid takeaways in general TBH.

Pest control has taken me in to the kitchens & storerooms of every type of takeaway, & I don't like what I've seen.

Put it this way, the front of shop/restaurant may look clean the kitchens, food prep & stores rarely are.

They are supposed to be of course !!!
