vtr firestorm starting and running problem.

Post by Ryan1000 »

hi folks,

i was out riding the other day when my bike cut out and wouldnt start again seemed to me like the starter motor had jammed. the relay was giving 1 click each time the button was pushed. i got it home and started messing around with it, tryed giving the starter motor a wee chap, it didnt free anything off i gave the button some abuse and it turned over and started but there was a hellish banging and clucking as if the starter motor was jammed on. does any 1 have any ideas or test i can do to determine what the problem is .
thanks alot Ryan .

Greetings

Check under the rubber hood on the the starter motor where the leccy lead goes in - if it's corroded in past the seals then it could well be knackered.

Blackbird starters fit the same and are more available,

Bung some pics of your storm up! and tell us where you live as someone might be nearby to take a gander.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Sprag may be fkt also... Usually due to a failed reg rec nackering the battery and the engine kicking back when it fires.
That happens on all v twins, not just the storm btw
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Ah. Do we have a failed CCT issue?

Have you got manuals fitted, or are they standard Honda CCT's?

If you don't know what I'm on about, I'm probably right....

But to check if it's the starter motor, try removing the starter motor, undoing the inspection cap in the middle of the alternator cover LH side, and turn the engine over with a 17mm socket.
If it turns over smoothly, then yes, it's the starter or sprag clutch, maybe caused by alternator, reg/rec or starter sprag problems. Or just a flat battery.

But if it won't turn over, or it still makes mechanical noises when you do so, then it'll be a failed cct which has caused at least two bent valves.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
