What are they there to do in the first place? is it to slow air flow on the wall of the airbox as it will be travelling faster than the air closer to that ridge that was inside the box?
Also why did Honda have that divider inside the airbox only allowing a few cm gap for air to pass over to the filter element in the first place
Was reading an article with regards to air flow dynamics and speeds etc and got me thinking about all the ridges and strange bits inside it
MCN said the straighter you can get the intake tract / snorkel the better and faster / smoother air flow to the box makes a significant improvement with regards to tuning, it went on to say this is why new bikes have such small tanks to get the intake as straight as possible underneath it
Sounds like you answered your own question .
Some say the ridges are their for strength but I think they are their to slow dawn air flow .
And to direct it .
The tuners now remove all lumps and bumps in the air box they spend weeks trying to make it as slippery as possible .

Not trying to answer my own question mate that was my theory which to be fair are often way off the mark,
was just wondering if someone knew knew what they was genuinely there for on the roof of the lid, cant see it being strength as its not supporting the tank etc
Interesting thread as I haven't done a lot of airbox mods...yet.
Though I will add a little info for carb set up.
When running "ram-air" or no air filter (which might be close to some of the High Flow fithers) the HRC\Moriwaki set up was to block the air bleeds and run mains in the 150\160 range. The other thing they had was needles with a fatter mid-range.
While I no longer have my HRC ram-air needles, I do know where they are and I don't believe they are being used, so if needed I might be able to broker some sort of deal....

Tony what size was the breather that was used how did you fit it to the catch tank? have you put it over the hole over fitted the pipe inside the small hole, i know that sounds strange but makes sense if you look at the catch tank

By the way, it chips paint off the lower edge of the tank.....you might want to do a neater job than I did
Yes, it fits into the open hole in the end of the little plastic catch tank that used to be in the airbox.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Nice one mate was the ID size i needed thanks, going to try this one as it look like it might not take off the paint being cone shaped, got two on order for carb breathers as is
