If this weather keeps it up we can all trade our bikes in for one of these.

I can't even ride my 1979 Kawasaki 125 round country roads below 40mph, and I have no chance on the storm :(

Some of the comments on there made me laugh, like the idiot going on about tailgatting, as if speed limits going to stop stuff like that.

I don't see how 40mph speed limits going to help pedesterians, they get killed easy at half the speed, maybe some proper walking paths could be built ( oh yeah that costs the government money )

Cyclists are a law unto themselves, wether they are just someone riding a bike or one of those lycra wearing road nazis, who follow the law when it suits them and then act like a pedestrian when they want to get somewhere quick and have to actualy follow the road laws, I have always been in favour of cycle paths after seeing it work in Holland, but again that costs money which is something the government cant afford as we need to pump money into third world countries and foriegn oil wars, and the back pocket of fat cat bankers so they can go on living an obscene lifestyle and passing something down to the ministers, to live semi obscene lifstyles.

Horse and carts, speed limits aint going to help them, we have to face the fact that they were using roads long before us so as much as people hate it there here to stay, perhaps educating drivers about them when they go on driving courses and educate the horse people that respect goes boths ways might go a long way when it comes to road sense, rather than putting the speed limit to 40mph.

i had to drive from felixstowe to lowestoft (exotic hey?) the other day in my works vivaro. its just under 50 miles and only about 10 of them are dual cariageway, the rest is a mixture of 30 , 40 , 50 . there are about 5 fixed gatso,s and i spotted about 5 of the scum who sit with a camera poking out of the back of their van. on the way back feeling a bit more tired than when i went ( i had to pretend to be working all day) it was so hard not to drop off in the slow bits whereas if it was 30 through villages and 60 everywhere else im sure my concentration levels would be greater. also worrying about which speed limit applies is a distraction as it goes up and down the whole time with poor signage.

i also cannot believe people are allowed to ride horses on the road in this day and age. the wierd thing is , is that if they just look to the left there is nearly always a nice big empty field with gap between the crops and the hedge just big enough for a horse.
3 out of 4 people make up 75% of the worlds population.

I totally agree with that mate 100%!

If you talk to a horsey person about this subject they'll say "well horses have been on the road a lot longer than cars"

Yeah and you used to be able to go for a skinfull of beers then drive home once upon a time without it causing too much fuss, but now we live In a totally different world!

Rant over! Bottom line I hate horses!

What great examples of tolerance and live and let live some people show. You "hate" horses, cyclists and caravans, horseriders "hate" motorcyclists etc. Horseriders can ride in fields (someone else's fields though - I doubt they own them).

None of which is in any way constructive regarding a debate about a 40mph limit on country roads.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

I don't think horses are much of a problem as they tend to stick to the smaller country back lanes and are normally near the villages. What is more of a problem is the people that drive at 30 on national speed limit roads, holding all the traffic up behind them who are busting to find a place to overtake.

I totally agree about concentration levels being distracted by looking out for speed cameras and also bad signage. And drink driving is as bad as ever in the country. The locals will do it all the time and drive back from the pub via the country back lanes to avoid the old bill, as 9 times out of 10 they stick to the more main routes.

Pedestrians are just stupid at times. when I walk down country roads I follow the county code (not sure if this is taught anymore) but always walk towards the oncoming traffic and if approaching blind bends, crossover before the bend so you see what's coming round the corner. Wear bright clothes and carry a torch at night. The torch is good for blinding drivers that don't slow down  they soon slow down when they can't see  But generally you see the cars coming, so just stand still to the side of the road and aim the torch at yourself to highlight thing's and let the vehicle pass.

People will think I'm crazy for saying this, but there is such a big deal made about death being being a bad thing. We need more people to die. We live in an overpopulated world/country. It's fact the planet cannot sustain itself with the increase. It causes tension because of crowded roads, streets etc. There is a lack of housing and jobs because of it, and the resources of the planet are getting used up. And at the same time medical advances are too bloody good and we wombles with nature too much. People live longer and more babies are saved. Let nature take it's course, which it will do eventually. We see it with the weather now. All we need next is some mass epidemic disease.

So IMO if people are stupid enough to drive like a maniacs and go over the edge of a cliff or walk out in front of fast moving vehicles then tough luck. We got to be cruel to be kind as the old saying goes.
