Stopper Mod?

Post by Boubepo »

I'm considering doing the stopper mod, although I will need to do a lot more reading on the subject before I even attempt it.

In the meantime -

Can anyone explain in real basic terms how this mod works, I can't visualise it or get my head around how it makes it fail safe.

Also if the mod makes it fail safe, why the need for mcct's?

Sorry for the dumb @rse questions but you have to take into account -I am new to VTR's and I am indeed a dumb @rse :)

It's in the workshop Knowledgebase section.

It stops the plunger retracting fully when the spring fails. That means it can't retract far enough to allow the cam chain to get so slack as to be able to jump cam sprocket teeth, just rattle a bit.

But the spring can still fail, and will then need the stopper mod doing on a replacement working cct.
Manuals never need doing again, just very occasional adjustment- about every 2 years or more.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

+1

I done the stopper (mainly because I'd already bought the new autos) and its a nice feeling not having to adjust them, but nice to know when they do go I'll be safe so to speak.

If you've already got your autos there should be a 'key' in the end, holding the plunger in.
If you take the key out the end of the cct the plunger will wind 'out' under the pressure of the cct spring ( the one that fails)

If you PM me your email I'll send you a bigger pic of my Avatar so you can see what's inside the cct's

if you look at the pictures above and below and then I can try and help with the following description

so the CCT works by adjusting its axial length using a rotation of the lead screw under torsional spring pressure. the spring also ensures that it will not back drive the screw under the load of the cam chain. But if the spring fails there is nothing to stop the lead screw retracting to the fully in position.

the stopper mod involves fitting a length of bar [the stopper] inside the screw mechanism so as to limit the free travel backwords, but have no effect of the continued forward stroke which is the normal function of the Auto tensioning process.

The key is to cut the length of the stopper to the exact length ["A" on the sketch] to suit each cylinder of your bike, and to do this you have to measure the exact stroke which is used in normal operation, and then subtract a calculated amount to give a good working free play for the normal rev / thermal movement of the CCT.

you take the end off the Plunger, insert the stopper and put the plunger head back on, and the CCT will go in and out as normal, but is now limited on how far in it can go, and this will ensure you only get a rattle problem from a slightly loose cam chain on failure not a bent valve from a jumped tooth.

Thanks guys,

I posted the opening thread as I left for work, I'm home again now and there it all is - diagrams, help, links, all explained!

I think it speaks volumes for the guys who make this site what it is - so many thanks.

I can see there are some good instructions for both the stopper mod and the manual cct's here, I'm good for changing brake pads and minor jobs but I'm a bit on the fence when it comes to tackling this job solo and with confidence, so I'm thinking of paying a mechanic to do the job for me. Based on the info and if I'm paying for a mechanic, it's probably best to go for the job done in one step and go for the manual cct's

Next question is which make of mcct's? - Due to the colour of my bike, I'm not keen on using the red mcct's, so would need to be stainless, seems there are a few different types available - What's considered best of the stainless?
