another reg issue i think

Post by griffo117 »

ok so got a genuine reg rec and installed it but now its starting at 12.8 and goes up to 13.2 when at 3500rpm stays at 12.8 at idle then goes and sits at 12.5 to 12.6 wires arent hot and reg is no way near hot just warm
checked at the back of the connecter and it reads 13.4 on the + and - but at the battery its 12.5 to 12.6 so any ideas all i can think is there might be a break in the wiring harness or bad connection between the terminals etc

the reg is brand new $160

I would check out the alternator. Remove the three yellow wires from the rectifier and check with a multi-meter (each wire in turn) to see if any of the three give a reading to earth, they shouldn't. The workshop manual also shows how to test each circuit of the alternator.

Also check the yellow wires from the rectifier to the alternator, it could be seeing as you had a heat problem (Re:Oz link) in the wiring that the wire(s) have built up some resistance. It may just be you need to cut back the yellow wires a bit more and rejoin the connectors.

Lazy git, you're wasting my time out in the sun

According to the haynes manual you need to follow the wiring back from the alternator until you come to a block terminal connector. Unplug it and check the alternator from there. You need to set the multi-meter to the ohms setting X 1. You then need to check the resistance from one yellow wire to another, so with three wires you will end up with three readings (write each one down as you go). They should be all similar readings if the alternator windings are good.

Here you go http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-triple- ... grade.html I know it's a triumph forum, but the principle is the same.
