clutch noise

Hi all im new to this forum and a new 1998 vtr 1000 owner ive had a few bikes in my time mainly inline 4's and a single cylinder 600 i just wanted to check
with these bikes is the clutch rattle normal it goes away when the lever is pulled in was thinking maybe clutch bearing/plates/or just the springs. any info would be great

A rattle that goes away when you pull inthe clutch is fairly normal, so you are ok.

They all do that, Sir.

But the centre clutch bearing is worth replacing; it's a needle roller but an easy press fit.
It'll reduce the noise, but never completely remove it.

You have to drain coolant to get to it, though, fairing off, water pump off, clutch cover off, clutch off (you need a clutch holding tool to get the basket off) then press the bearing out, rebuild.
Don't forget to have a new clutch cover gasket on hand.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
