Vtr was running great a day later it's all gone wrong.

Post by hunter62 »

Hi my vtr firestorm 1998 was running great it's is due a service witch I was going to do this weekend but now when I start the bike up there is white smoke and a lot of white smoke. It's lost power and takes all its time to get to 40mph and when I turn the bike off petrol runs out from the petrol tank drain pipe. I've got no idea whats gone wrong. The bike was running great oneday and the next it's terrible. Please if anyone has any idea what it could be it would be great to no. Thank you.

you sure its coming from the tank drain tube and not a carb bowl tube???
could be as simple as a bit of crap in the float / needle valve and its flooding the carb and the white smoke it a massively over-rich mix.

does it stink of fuel when it runs, at the exhaust?
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

It could be a few things, but I'd be inclined to pull the carbs off and have a look at the carb rubbers, float bowls (as Benny suggests) and maybe the petrol tap diaphragm.

I agree that it shouldn't be a fuel tank line, but it's possible, so isolate the line that petrol is coming out of and tell us where it goes to.

Also check the coolant levels, as there is a possibility of head gasket failure.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

white smoke is definitely water vapour, sounds like a gasket to me. ask a local bike shop to check compression, or start bike up, remove radiator cap and check for bubbles . be careful of water in oil ! early signs are a white creamy oil residue on filler cap

White smoke is normally coolant burning. Does it smell "sweet" (best way i can think of to describe it) when it runs or really fuelly?

Where abouts are you from? Maybe someone might be able to take a look for you?

yh it stinks of fuel petrol does run out of the fuel tank lead nipple when switched off after been running.
went out on it last night it struggles to pick up speed but it jolts forward then shuts off again.i no its a vtwin but it sounds lumpy more than it should do!!

Do you mean the one that pokes vertically down under the fuel tap, hanging down at the rear of the tank?

Right. If fuel is flowing out of that one, it's the petrol tap rubber that's got a hole in it. No biggie, search for a petrol tap rebuild kit, less than twenty quid.

And yes, you'll need to change the oil and filter afterwards before running it.
