Fried Battery

Post by Boubepo »

It was 4pm and sunny and hot [Southern Spain] so decided to take the Storm to a remote beach, 100 km away, do a bit of sunbathing, watch the sun go down and head back - All very romantic, if only I wasn't on my Jack Jones!

Then I tried starting her in the twilight, only to find the battery was dead! agggghhh! It has always seemed really healthy until now - what's going on? luckily there was a sharp downhill tar-mac slope leading to the sea, all I had to do was run downhill and bump I thought! I didn't count on the thin layer of sand on the road, the back wheel didn't make any traction whatsoever.

So now I'm at the bottom of a 100 m, ^^^^^^^ gradient slope, down by the sea. there's no one around to help me push it back up! I could only manage to push it uphill 2m at a time with the weight and my feet slipping on the sand, it felt like some kind of cruel 'It's a Knockout Show'

Eventually I get to the top totally exhausted! soaked in sweat. I spend the next 90 mins begging Spanish drivers for jump leads. I get lucky, bike starts first time.

I ride the 100km back home getting low on fuel but not wanting to stop, in case Battery is really fooked.

Good call, I get to my garden gate, switch off, while I open gate, only for the bike not to start again! Unbelievable eggy smell and the battery dead again. Eggy smell is unreal with a high pitch whine coming from the bike/battery area! I check the battery and it's very, very hot! but dead as a Dodo!

Whats going on?

Sounds like the reg/rec has done itself a mischief. It's under the right tail fairing and is a regular issue. Have a look, if it's unfinned then check the connector block for signs of burning/melting. Sounds like you will be hitting the bay for a finned replacement or a Yamaha version, oh and a new battery.

Your regulator had fried your battery

Regulator/Rectifier

Underneath seat cowl bolted on to subframe as you sit on the right. Is it unfinned?

Next question - Where can I get a cheap, finned Regulator and get it to Spain, either Honda's best, a Jap alternative or a very, very cheap sweatshop, manufactured regulator from Beijing?

Presumably Honda CBR 125s are / were sold Spain - nab one from one of them from a local breakers / Spanish ebay and you'll be sorted - along wth a new battery.

See today's latest R/R thread >> http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=25656
or a very, very cheap sweatshop, manufactured regulator from Beijing?
Why would you want something that could fry your battery/electrics at an inopportune time/pace again?? :confused

I want something quick, so I can get her back on the road - and lets face it, 95% of parts come from Beijing anyway

What gear did you have it in while trying to bump start? It's a Knockout Show   I used to love watching that program. The only thing that is missing from your post is a picture of the sunset. You deserve a large glass of Sangria after that

It was a nice steep slope, probably about 100m long, I started off in 3rd only for the rear wheel to find no traction on the thin layer of sand covering the tarmac, so at 30m I moved up to 4th, still no traction, so out of desperation I even tried 5th over the last few metres. The sand was getting deeper as I got closer to the beach and all I could think about was pushing it back up that looong slope!

I said it was tarmac but it was actually those square shiny cobbled stones you get in Spain, with the layer of sand on top it was as slippery as hell. At one point while trying to push it up, I was taking a breather with the front brake on, only for me and the bike to start slipping back down hill again! - nightmare, I felt like I'd pushed it to the highest peak of Mount Everest by the time I'd made it to the top!

I usually leave it in 2nd if I need to bump start. It was probably a blessing in disguise that yours did not start. By the sounds of it, you might have shot off and slipped on the surface or ended up in the sea. You did remember to turn the kill switch off

Any luck finding a replacement reg/rec.
