Fried Battery

I have identified a few potential replacements on ebay, trouble is, I reckon I'm looking at 7 - 10 days to get it shipped over to Spain, not the end of the world but hey! - when your Firestorm is off the road, it's a difficult thing to take, I'm trying to source one locally but will probably waste more time in doing so and end up wishing I'd gone for the first UK ebay option

My battery was completely cooked, it was actually making a squealing noise when I stopped!

I have a spare battery and I've been told by a mechanic - as long as I take the regulator off the bike I can use the bike with the spare battery for the time being, although it will need recharging every few days.

I hadn't concidered this as I just assumed my spare battery would also become fried without the reg/rec - if this is the case? I should be able to use the bike while I'm waiting for the regulator to arrive.

Thought I'd just ask here first, to double check - before I fry another battery

I wouldn't want to go more a few laps relying soley on a total loss battery system - esp with the lights on and starting...

Many moons ago my ol' GPZ fried its R/R as I left work and as I went along even the load of using the indicators would bring it grinding to halt - luckily I got it to kawasaki dealer just 5 miles away. Though on the other hand I also remember running a Superdream over winter with a knackered battery and even having to bump it everytime, it ran quite well.

With your experience of the joy of pushing and bumping the storm its up to you if you want to risk repeating it again before you get it properly fixed.

Not too good an idea, as you don't know what the problem is yet.
If it's the RR, yes, it'll work, but the starter on these takes a lot of current each time, so starting it will quickly become impossible.

But if it's the alternator, you stand a chance of just killing another battery.

Thanks Tony, I've been a little unsure about the advice from my Mechanic, so other than briefly starting her up yesterday [I was hankering just to hear it, if only for 20 seconds!]

So I've taken it off the road until the new reg/rec arrives, wasn't sure if I was justified in being that cautious but after listening to you and other guys here - I think I'm better being safe than sorry.

I'm also in the process of ordering manual CCT's. Seems I've already had a fair amount of bad luck & drama with this bike - Mega problems and expense getting it shipped over, the seat burnt in a forest fire! reg/rec blowing and in turn frying the battery and leaving me at the bottom of a big slope by the sea!

I have replaced the pads and the tyres and have a new chain and sprockets on order but I just know with my run of luck, the CCT's will catastrophically drop me in it if I don't get them replaced as soon as poss!

I love my Storm but got to say it's provided a bit of drama in 2 months I've had it!

What goes down will come up or visa versa as they say. So you luck will change Getting the CCT's done and out the way will be a good move. It gives you peace of mind then. But CCT's and R/R are the only two problems with these bikes. The seat, well that was something else, we have no control over that one.

Have a good read through View Topic View Topic http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8326 and do not use a Haynes manual for CCT's as it has errors in it. Just take you time with fitting them and double check everything you do. If you have any questions or concerns then just ask.

Other preventative maintenance items for the storm include greasing the rear shock linkages, greasing starter motor bolt (under the rubber hood) and if you are about to embark on CCT replacement - undoing periodically and applying some lube to the the alternator timing access caps.

After your R/R issues check all the electrical connection and clean any corrosion off.

... and carry a fire extinguisher or keep a full bladder at all time...

Thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated, I just have to wait for the Reg/rec to arrive now! Seems like I've been waiting weeks already!

To add to the bad luck associated with the bike I've just had to order another V5 as the one I had sent on, has been lost by the Spanish Postal System grrrrrrrr!

I can't have any more bad luck with this bike or can I? The answer to that is probably - a big FAT Yes!
