Mine backfired when I bought it - after a carb balance it stopped.
It could also be caused by air being sucked into the exhaust through leaks at the connectors.

happy troubleshooting

Another favorite to check is the fuel tap.
Is the vauum diapram working or the hose going to it in good nick?
Del said a little while ago he's had a couple of the front HT caps braking down as well

i have the same problem. when te engine is cold it runs great but after it warms up a bit she starts to backfire and miss @ around 5000 rpm. tried plugs, wires, carbs, oil, i even took the little resister out of the plug wires. and it is still doing it. :( :?
