Can't you sign a disclaimer saying they can keep it (for scrap) and you don't want it back?
I had a bike knicked before a had to go to the compound to see it but I can not remember having to pay mate.
How can they make you pay, it's not like 'if you don't pay we won't give your bike back' as you don't want it!.....

I'm sure you can claim it back from the police . You will need to nip into the local station to get the phone number for the company that does it .
When I had the blade I had a new plate made and fitted it but I didn't notice it was one number out :-).
Then one night some friends and I was out playing down the lanes making good progress as you do ! .
But we didn't notice the unmarked car chasing us . So when we got back into the 30mph limits he pulled us over :-(
Did the reg checks and as I had the wrong plate on the recovered my bike .
It cost me £150 to get it back .
But the officer said if I can prove my mistake I can claim the money back all I had to do was get that number from the front desk and make a claim .
So it might be worth it just to nip down and see if you can make a claim to get it back .

That's exactly what happened to me. I ended up not paying and loosing the crashed bike.My guess is they can do this, and it is much worse if you are in hospital and the daily charge is building up!

I assume Steve's talking about his uninsured track bike? If it was the insured bike you could claim for these costs ( if fully comp)scott02464 wrote:Can't you sign a disclaimer saying they can keep it (for scrap) and you don't want it back?

I don't understand why Steve didn't dash over and (or arrange) to collect it as soon as knowing it had been recovered, before the Police used the contractor. But then presumably as its not a road legal bike it couldn't be ridden away, then they did Steve a favour getting it away securely from where it had ben found.

Had a call from Greater Manchester Police earlier.
They have recovered the track bike

If the police had rung me I would have come and picked it up!
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
