Cracked header/downpipe

Post by markg »

Put a thread on there the other day but its disapeared :?
My 'Storm exhaust header pipe/downpipe is cracked at a weld just forward of the link pipe connection to the r/h can, luckily someone who I trust with the bike has offered to weld it up with the pipes still fitted to the bike.
Obviously the battery has to be removed but is everything else ok?
Also read on here somewhere from a thread long ago that the header pipes are stainless steel, can anyone confirm this because they sure as hell don't look like they are made of stainless steel but I know a different welding technique is needed for stainless steel.

all advice good or bad appreciated :)

Yes mate they are stainless although a very poor quality at that.
They do weld up quite ok though.

If you have any problems I will soon be offering proper 304 stainless headers for a good price.

I agree its poor quality stainless. Mines an 01 bike and sometimes they look like they're about to rust out. I've been trying to decide whether they'rs stainless or not - now I know!

I've welded stainless with a MIG (tried it on a couple of pieces of cutlery first - wife wasn't impressed!!).
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.
