Charging a Satnav

I like doing long distance even though Storms aren't the best for it and use a satnav. Had one rigged up from ignition and now direct from batter and same problem with both. The satnav works fine but then starts flickering then dies. After a 'rest' it works again. I'm thinking it's getting too much charge. Any thoughts? I'm wondering whether to get one of those 12v alarm batteries and run it from that instead but it'd go flat after a few hours.

I think they run off 5v dc, you havent wired it to 12v and by passed the converter/inverter......

is it a old tomtom if it is they ten to over heat and the screen freezes .

i have a tomtom on my bike and have it wired in through a 12v fag lighter scocket to the battery .
it works very well but as its getting old now it likes to over heat and turn off .

No it's a Binatone. Works fine in the car from a cig lighter socket but when operated from my storms cig socket it starts flickering then goes off. Overheating sounds feasible. I was also wondering if it was the storms infamous vibration.

try mounting it on rubber

I use an old Navman sat nav powered by cig lighter from under the seat. It fits nicely i an old tobacco tin with cut out on lid with plastic cover to see screen. It's mounted on the two bolts that hold the tank on. Had it for a few years now find it useful

It was also a hot day so maybe overheating. I might try it again now it's cooler and if all's ok I'll put it down to overheating. If it still does it, I'll try putting it in my tankbag where it's cushioned and if that cures it I'll put it down to vibration. If it still does it there may be an overcharging problem.

Hi temp, surely that would be causing probs with more than just my satnav, blown bulbs etc. No other electrical probs on my storm apart from satnav.

It could always be the sat nav itself at fault. Have you tried it off the bike at all.
