Engine light tick
Engine light tick
Hi folks,
Just got my storm back from garage where i booked it in due to hearing a light ticking noise from the front part of the engine. I thought maybe the manual cct's were needing adjustment.
Turns out they are fine and that it is in fact that the valves/tappets (whatever you call them) are needing adjusted. just on the front cam though as the rear sounds fine.
This is very dissapointing as the bike has had its service book stamped at 16k miles from a Honda main dealer ticking the box that shows valve adjustment done..... The service was carried out 16,800 miles and the bike has now done 22000 miles ....5200 miles later and im being told that they need done again. The garage today did say that its unlikely that they were not done at its 16k service. Although i have a reciept in the bikes history for a near £400 bill for it. Of course there is no way to prove this now, and all i know is that it needs done again.
Ive been quoted £160 approx to have them done at a garage.....i just wish i new how to do them myself as its frustrating to have to pay this when it shouldnt need done so soon.
Is anybody on here local to me that has the knowledge to do it and i could bring the bike to them to do ...i would pay for your time and include lots of tea n buscuits lol.
Im in Wishaw (Lanarkshire). Or can anyone recommend a garage that will do the work ? The garage local to me is HMS, and i see he has some very bad feedback from forum users on here..

The the Valve clearance procedure is covered in the downloadable PDF Honda VTR1000F Service manual which is in the Workshop Knowledgebase section (pg 42-45 3-7). Take the old shims into a workshop and swap em for the required size.
Way cheaper than £460 or even £160 - the total which you could have bought a whole engine for!

Re: Engine light tick
mine had it done before i bought it when the cct's shat themselves. the engine was quiet as a daisy before but after 1000 miles or so it comes back, sometimes it can be a warn cam aswell? unless its crazy load i wouldnt worry to much, these are old bikes now so are gonna have the odd rattle here and there unless you want to rebuild the whole engine

Re: Engine light tick
Okay going back a bit
Do you know when the manual CCTs were installed ? before or after the 16,000 service?
How do you know they are fine? As manual CCts are the easiest to adjust compared to doing valve clearances why not have a tinker before delving deeper.I thought maybe the manual cct's were needing adjustment.

Wait for the next workshop & get them done then. I need to get mine done as well, plus you know the people who are working on the bikes know what they are talking about as well
A slight tick will do no harm untill then.

Re: Engine light tick
He's talking about a forum workshop day. Every so often someone volunteers to have a workshop day at their house where we meet up and do some work on our bikes. The idea behind it is that the owner works on their own bike under the watchful eye of someone that knows what they are doing. It's also a social thing and we have a ride out at the end of the day. The last one was held in Eseex http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 14&t=24751 and before that Birmingham http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 14&t=24747
All we need now is for someone to hold a workshop day in Scotland.

We've seen your garage in the photos and that will be a palace compared to the normal workshop events where we are working on the front drive and hoping there is no rain.
You Just have to find a date where enough locals will turn up and also someone who is the experience who will mentor all the tricky jobs. ... Not easy, but it is possible.
The one thing i will say is that there is no big rush to fix the valve clearances, it won't be doing any harm, so you can take your time and either get a workshop day set up or do them Over the winter and do it nice and slow asking questions on here as you go.
We have a box of shims which Benny hedges owns that goes to all workshop days, you might be able to borrow that.

Re: Engine light tick
Not sure if its relevant on my VTR1000 F3 when i accelerate i hear a rattle, seems to come from the front of the bike only when riding , but if i back off a little the rattle goes any ideas ..........the engine sounds fine when free standing and when compared to other VTRs.
Re: Engine light tick
If the CCT was going it will let go when you throttle off not under load. Check all your fairings are secure. I found 2 of the bottom fixings has rattled loose. Cable ties work a treat.
Re: Engine light tick
Wwell thats one saving grace mate, im a born worrier when it comes to stuff like the engine...lolAMCQ46 wrote:
