some kind of hand gaurds are vital to get your hands out of the cold air stream, I have seen people using plastic milk containers or oil containers cable cut up & cable tied to the bars like huge enduro brush gaurds. under that you need ski gloves or heated kit.
My hand gaurds are like Lloydies..... the fully enclosed tin box with windows solution:shh:

Re: The cold is coming. Time to plan. Hands.
A couple of years ago I bought EXO2 heated gloves and vest. Those coupled with a set of heated grips is a must for riding through winter.
I have the EXO2 matching temperature controller for them mounted on the bars of my Versys but just use a simple bar mounted on/off switch on my Monster to control them an the grips (for a OEM stealthy look).
Much better then wearing loads of layers and no need for hand guards (I have those on the Versys but don't really do much for keeping the wind off - your hands will still get cold with them on the bike)

Tried muffs before, didn't like them at all. I'd take my hand out to wipe my visor and struggle to get my hand back in the muff. I also had probs accessing the switches on the bars. Heated gloves sound good but are damned expensive but seen a few cheap 2nd hand ones on Ebay.

I used bar muffs when riding every day throughout the winter for an hour and a half each way.
I found that Oxford muffs were pushed back by the wind, and made the front brake come on as the elver is pushed in towards the bars.
Took me ages to work it out, and then had to ride with my fingers extended pushing it forward again anytime I went over 60.
I was going to rig a little wire frame, but didn't bother in the end.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
