Mates Tank Slapper in Greece on hired bike. Laws?
One of my mates has dropped a bike in Greece. He's ok but been to hospital and bikes forks bent. Greece is in the EU so will he be billed for the hospital? Also the hire company only had the bike insured 3rd party only so will or can they bill him for the damage to bike?

Not if he got an EHIC card http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcare ... -ehic.aspx don't know about the bike hire place though.Greece is in the EU so will he be billed for the hospital

EHIC only covers state hopitals etc, so if he was taken to a private hospital it won't cover costs, but surely he took out travel insurance?
The bike rental will be covered by the rental agreement, so if it says that he is liablefor damage, then he is. Without a copy of the agreement then it isn't possible to say - there is usually a huge excess anyway.
I wouldn't recommend trying to leave a country with unpaid medical bills - if the hospital alerts the border controls and he is stopped at the airport then it's a whole new ball game

Make sure that you have the necessary insurance cover before you hire a motorcycle - it should cover you for dangerous sporting activities. Many insurance policies do not account for this, and you cannot claim it back on travel insurance.
Typical Motorcycle Hire conditions in Greece > 3rd party insurance included, renter is responsible for cost of all damage/loss/theft. If he paid extra for Comprehensive cover than as stratman said there would still be a significant excess to pay (at least 2000 euros).

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Insurance is a scam worldwide then. Makes me wonder what's the point.
Looks like your mate is gonna be hit with a bill. Lets hope the hire company take pity on him.

No chance in Greece if things are still the same.cybercarl wrote:Insurance is a scam worldwide then. Makes me wonder what's the point.![]()

When we were there a few years ago the reps had to sneak a guy on a plane and home early after a similiar incident. Massive bill after a small amount of damage to a moped and when they found out he couldn't pay they came looking for him. And not for a friendly chat......

I hired a Yamaha XT660 R in Crete and it scared the hell out of me - I think the tyres were plastic, no grip whatsoever. Park on a hill and apply the front brake and the front wheel would lock and slide backwards. Great fun exploring the hills and inland but I've never ridden anything so carefully in my life. They didn't even check if I had a bike license.

The point is, if he/you hit a pedestrian and they end up disabled and sue, the insurance policy picks up the tab instead of you owing thousands in compensation.cybercarl wrote:Insurance is a scam worldwide then. Makes me wonder what's the point.![]()

BTW, motorcycling is NOT classed as a "dangerous activity" on travel insurance policies. Many only cover bikes up to 125 cc, others will cover "incidental use". Make sure your policy covers you for touring for a week/fortnight of that is what you are doing. I use One Stop/Drakefield, part of the AA and their policy is not the cheapest but covers everything I need and I take out an annual policy to cover other non bike trips.

He's been billed 100 euros for the hospital despite having the card.
The hire company want 1000 euros off him.
Don't know yet whether they want this before he leaves Greece or when he's back here!
I think I would have been straight on the first flight home if it were me!
