sorry to be a pain, can someone point me in the direction of the 'How to section' for valve adjustment.

Look in the workshop knowledgebase section for the VTR1000F (Superhawk) Firestorm Service Manual - searchable PDF - It's covered in 3. Maintenance 3-7 Valve Clearance.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
