Grey Imports

Post by Goose »

Morning All - another question...
What's the general feel here towards imports...

How many here have imports? -

Any problems ordering spares, compatibility problems?

What would a new speedo cost for a 1997/1998 model?

Does the headlight need to be changed, or just aligned for UK roads?

TIA

Hi goose,
Wouldnt swear to it but i think its the glass that is graded to give the correct angle for uk roads. You could probably get away with it however, but if riding at night you might have blind spots on your kerbside, etc.
Not certain though, anyone else got any views ? :?

I bought a new headlight for mine off of ebay for £60.

didn't know it was an import as such, was told when i bought it that it was uk speck(although it was from an importers...so a big hint there i guess)

when i took it for a service to my local dealer he told me the headlight was pointing in the wrong direction (up to the right), so i don't think mine could be adjusted to suit our mot, prompting the new one.

also found out that it had restrictors in the carbs/air box intakes, don't know how much they effected it though as i think there is a 100hp law in some parts of europe and the storm only puts out about that anyway.

headlight...on 97/98 imports the dip to the right is moulded into the reflector (not the glass/lens) and no amount of adjustment will compensate if the mot tester actually checks the headlamp (my R reg model failed in 2004 cos of headlamp after 4 previous passes!) , later models have a flat beam on dip(I think)!
I replaced lamp unit from David Silver Spares http://www.davidsilverspares.com

You can get a converter for the speedo and trip which will show mph rather than kph but its hard to read (needle hardly gets off stop at 30mph, only a fraction of an inch more to 60 or 70 and not even half way when you're doing 3 figures plus).... http://www.redial-uk.co.uk will convert to mph and replace the speedo face, indistinguishable from the origional uk spec! Only 2 day turnaround plus post time!

good luck

A europe spec headlight won't pass an MoT....when you adjust it for UK roads it doesn't dip enough to pass the test.
Drink to contentment not to capacity. I just haven't figured out which comes first.

You guys are lucky. My import from Japan is Jap Spec and limited to only 190km/h!

If anyone has a Euro spec CPU box I'd be very interested!

Mine's a German, I think. Flat beam dip, so no probs there. Scorpio electrnics in King's Lynn will alter the speedo from kph to mph and supply a new dial - they did mine a few years back and I had a white background instead of black, which was nice.
