Thermostat leaking...

Post by Ckennedy »

Out on a ride with AMcQ46 and a few others from here yesterday it was spotted that I had a small leak of coolant coming from what I think looks like the thermostat housing. Can I get just a gasket or is it a whole new unit? Had a quick look on ebay but could not see a gasket. Any one know where to get them or even if you can?

First you need to identify what and where it's leaking - dry it out spread some talcum powder round and take it for a spin round the block. Take the part no. from above link (hopefully just a leaky hose, trim it and clamp it up to see if that helps) and bung the part no into David Silvers find by part no. for price and availability.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Chris, do you mean the water pump or the thermostat? Th fluid was coming out onto the LH engine cover which is the pump area. There is drain hole in the clutch cover that lets out any water that gets past the pump mechanical seal, and as the fluid looked very rusty, it could be that.

When you take the fairing off you should see where the rusty water is starting from.

The most likely leak from the thermostat area on the LH side is the short hose linking the thermostat housing and the front cylinder head- it's straight and has just two clamps, one either end, you could try tightening them up first.

The airbox has to come off the get access to it.
The thermostat housing itself rarely leaks, just the hoses at their clamps. But occasionally a hose goes.

Al, the water pump is on the RH side....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thank you. I am pretty sure I know where it is leaking from but luckily I have a van from work this week so if the sun decides to come out I can take the fairing panels off and have a good proper look at it. Need to get it sorted before I go away next week. Peace of mind thing as it is only a very small dribble. Will also change the coolant at the same time as I do not know when it was last done before I got the bike.

Oops, yes it is the RH side where we spotted the rusty water...hence water pump seal is my first thought

The vicar won't let him stand in the font any more, since the unfortunate incident with the nappy, the proud mother's dress, the godfather's wig and the grease nipple.........

He must have been standing uphill, and the water ran out the other side.
If the water's that rusty it'll be attracted to the magnet in the alternator- that might explain it.
