Nasty SMIDSY

Post by mr.john.coates »

Riding to work on my 650 this morning I saw a beemer waiting to join the road. She had plenty of opportunity to get out in front of me but didn't and some sort of instinct made me nervous and I moved well to the centre. About a car length away, she pulled out leaving me with nowhere to go but into the other lane. Luckily nothing was coming but the swerve-and-brake got a good old rear wheel skid on that I only just recovered. Anxious moments and I was truly pissed off.

I'm a bit embarrased to say I pursued her, mainly because she completely ignored my long blast on my nautilus and carried on as if nothing had happened. I stopped her by stopping in front and delivered some good old fashioned anglo-saxon abuse. She said "please don't swear at me, but I didn't see you. If you don't want to get knocked off your bike, buy a hi viz jacket" CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! ?

It's been a long time since I came so close to coming off, but, the only bright part, I was reasonably impressed with my instincts and the way the skid was handled, although 9 times out of ten I think I'd have been off. Richard Head!

brown pants moment for sure ,, glad your ok
i do the warm up tyre weave when approaching a junction like that so they can see me riding like a nob .and its worked so far as no one has pulled out on me .
i also have my lights on ,

if you do the weave with lights on it makes a much bigger visual impact on the driver waiting to kill you . and they wont want to be near you when they join the carriageway .

if you treat them as they will pull out on you slow down and plan your escape just in case they do .

Hard-of-driving.

A common condition, sadly.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

If it's only your commuter bike, put some of these bad boys on it:

http://www.nutz4bikes.co.uk/epages/BT34 ... ts/HLURAIN

They look gay as wombles but they make such a massive difference. They change colour depending on the angle you view them from so they're yellow then you go over a bump and they go purple for a second or whatever. Also if you fit them in a triangle, it's such a weird shape, it makes people take a second look. I've put them on a mates bike then rode it round wales for a couple of days. Every cafe we pulled into people asked about them, said what a good idea it was. The difference from drivers is quite remarkable too. I only had one person pull out the whole time I was riding it which is quite alot less then it would have been normally :p.

Well worth a punt for that money.

(I do call 'em "Gay pride lights" though, so.. err. Make of that what you will.)
