how to change fork springs ?

Post by RAINMAKER »

Been many years since done anything like this, hows it done?
Do you just unscrew top caps a pull out spring or is it more complicated than that and how do you get top caps back on under pressure of spring.
Heard they come off like a rocket if any tension on springs ?
it may be clever, but its not big.

No, it's that simple. The caps are under some considerable tension from the springs though, you'll need to be ready to stop the caps flying off.

Lean on your socket, hard.

You heard right. Use a socket to remove the caps rather than a spanner. I always lean on the socket, hand on top of the ratchet head so that I can release the tension on the spring gradually when the cap is undone. Helps if you can get the front wheel clear of the ground, it reduces the spring tension.

Ohlins & Progressive both make replacement springs.

Heavier oil gives firmer damping as a rule, so your choice of oil depends on your riding. Mine is SAE7.5W, I think. I asked for a comfortable road biased set up, rather than track biased.

Best bet is call Roger at Revolution racing

He knows the VTR inside out and is more than happy to impart his knowledge
He'll tell you exactly what to get and where to get it, how to fit it and 101 other things besides
