Well today I had to concede. I have bought myself one of the mouse Sanders they are called. And no there not for sanding mice haha. Using it to take the pain off and then I shall do the smoothing by hand. This is doing a really nice job. Using 80 grain sand paper with it. It is taking the paint off nicely without making any unwanted marks. Nearly half of the paint is off. Shall make a big push with it tomorrow and hope to get all the paint off and go over it with 120 grit paper. If I manage to get that done tomorrow I shall be happy.

Today had shown good progress. Got the belly pan sanded and silky smooth with 400 wet and dry. Got it washed and let it dry. Started to prim it and to my annoyance, the primer was sh!t. It just cracked and ran like there was no tomorrow. Worst primer I have ever used. Anyway I let this dry and thought I would just apply the colour coat just to see if it was just as bad to apply and so I could offer it up to the bike when it dried to see how close the shade was. Luckily the colour paint was no where near as bad as the primer and it applied well. There is no chance of me rescuing it so a full sand back is required and then I shall use a different primer. Going to offer it up to the bike later and see what it looks like.

This is the colour:

Colour is looking good. Are you sure you didn't apply the primer too thick. The Simoniz products are very good if you can get them.

The primer was applied thinly. It was just like water. The colour is also miles off. It is to orange. I have applied a bit of a darker red I bought and that is pretty close. I shall strip it all back, prime it white and the use this darker red. I am hoping that the white primer will give it a slightly lighter edge. Shall get on with stripping it tomorrow. Will need some more sanding paper though so a run to the shop in the morning is a must.

Yup - Halfords flexible placcy primer if it's made of ABS placcy or your just sanded down the top coat or if your down to the glassfibre gelcoat then etch primer though seeing as your spraying in the kitchen you'd need to apply that elsewhere warm & dry as it's pretty toxic .

It was Halfords plastic primer that I used. Odd how you lot have had good experiences with it. I sprayed it in the shed and the bought it inside to dry before I took it out to the bike to check the shade.

Probably, if the weather was damp, the newly sprayed layer of primer sucked in moisture (hygroscopic: absorbing or attracting moisture from the air). That's why you need somewhere relatively warm & dry to spray and let it cure.

I once had a nightmare spraying Guzzi leMan bodywork in winter in an unheated garage, as when I sprayed two-pack paint onto the primer layer it kept going milky as this was moisture getting trapped/condensing out from the primer. :problem:

Carl or Wicky - could either of you do another photoshop of my bike but with a white belly pan please? Thought this may look ok with stickers on but just wanted to check before I actually do it. Belly pan is nearly back to bare again so not to far off needing painting :D

Does my belly look big in white? Looks like an Essex girl wearing a white mini-skirt....

I see what you mean. Not sure what colour to spray it not. Gone off the red idea as I can not find the right shade
