insurance declare

Post by lanny »

I have started tailoring my storm to my taste and just wondered at what point do you declare the mods to the insurance robbers ? The policy states each mod should be declared at the time of fitting but as i will be fitting individual mods over the winter this could amount to a phone call once a week for quite some weeks, i would guarantee that each call would incur admin cost on top of the loading for the mod .
If the mods were added over time and declared at the completion id like to bet that if something happened half way through the buggers would not pay up. i know this may sound pretty negative and the chance of something bad happening must be minimal but if i fit my ohlins shock and other expensive parts i would be well out of pocket if the worst did happen, however this does to me seem to be the option to use.
Has anyone had anything similar happen and do you bother declaring mods anyway ? What kind of loading should i expect for a grands worth of upgrades ?

Have just renewed my insurance and the mods made no difference in costs

I did the mods over the last year, all cosmetic

I reckon it's only the performance modifications that they are worried about

The section about different exhausts asks if they alter the performance or just cosmetic

In the end I suppose its up to you when you declare buddy

Maybe you have fitted the mods just the day before you dropped it, or even that morning

Cheers
I suppose anything other than standard would be seen as performance or you wouldnt bother. My mods are hyperpro fork internals which wont be seen, Ohlins shock, stainless brake hoses, C&S, Puig screen, Hugger, and a few other bits.

No, they don't seem to see other things as performance

Cosmetic hasn't affected my premium

Depends what is an upgrade/modification and what is replacing knackered parts

If your current springs are knackered   then you need to fit some new ones

As for your broken screen and hugger   its the same thing, you didn't buy original items

So maybe you replaced some parts, not modified??

As with a car, if you fit new parts they are not always manufactureres

You might fit better brake pads or fit new springs but dont declare it

just declare the ohlins because the other parts were on your bike when you bought it, and as far as you knew they were standard
even the ohlins wont bump your insurance up that much if any. i know because i declared everything on my highly modded bike, and i now pay a pretty high premium, but i do have piece of mind and a very comprehensive cover.
as its been said, they're mainly interested in three things, first will it make the bike faster and second will it make it more likely to be stolen, and thirdly will it make it more costly to repair or replace, i even had to agree that if my frame was damaged that they would only replace it with a standard frame because of my frames rarity....
good luck and let us know how you get on....

Your premium will mainly be because of the previous claim. The funny thing though apart from a good aftermarket exhaust sysyem, the only thing that is going to increase power is stuff they can't see internally.

For the first time ever Ive just declared every single little mod, didnt touch the price at all with a bit of haggling on the phone!

However they were very funny about my rear shock, it was the only thing they were concerned about, kept asking me questions why it was changed etc!

Mine is standard, so I don't have to worry.

It's a standard one, but with a few parts replaced with parts from a breaker's who said they'd fit ok.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
