Race cans - the science??

Post by T8ull »

So, IAM not technical, don't really understand why.......but.

Had the firestorm for 11 months now, just had the beowulfs taken off, originals put on. Just wanted to see what the difference was.

My findings.....

The original cans are obviously heavier ( although I don't notice this whilst knocking 80 mph out on the road)
The original cans do provide a smoother delivery at lower speeds ( town riding) , less noise obviously.
I also understand fuel economy is worse with the original cans? Don't give me the headache over longer rides. The bike does feel like a straight four now though, lost its vtwin persona completely.

The beowulfs....
Noisier, but a far better power delivery especially through throttle response, making overtakes more decisive, with less planning needed, kick down a gear and the thing takes off. The beowulfs can give me a headache with longer riding, with the constant bombombombom sound. The bike definitely feels like a twin with the beowulfs as oppose to a straight four with the originals.

Can anyone give me the answers as to why the bike is so different with original v aftermarket cans?

Tim

With the after market exhaust the engine can breath lots better and there give better power delivery (and sound)

If you want a nice in between either fit DB killers to After market cans
Or
Do a beffelectomy on the standard exhaust .

I've had 4 sets of cans on in the last year and the quality of the can its self makes a big difference. The longer it takes the can to heat up the better they are.Or it may just be placebo

Yeah, was thinking about the ear plug solution, may get some moulded as standard ones always fall out.

Will certainly get the race cans back on though.

Thanks for the comments

I actually think the difference is not really the race cans, but the carburetors.

So if you change the cans without adjusting your carbs, you get better performance with the cans which better fit to your carburetor adjustment.

So no science there.

I would say that you have done extremely well, if you don't lose more than 10% of power by installing the race cans.

The only way to be sure is dynometer.

Lots of the race can effect is really a placebo. But what the heck - Good placebo is better than bad medicine!

That depends on the quality of can. With a lot of high end priced exhausts there is no need to re-jet. Scorpians for one don't require any re-jetting, same with Arata's.

Have tried Vipers, Carbon Cans, and have put the originals on and off several times with holes drilled in and sealed up again !! :whatever
Then splashed out on some Beowulfs, sounds great, way more responce in the lower and mid range, and there staying on, comes complete with link pipes that actually fit, and a lifetime garantee (apparently), after removing the originals it took 20 mins to fit the lot, well impressed

Will see how they get on with the winter
