Bike test

Post by Kev L »

Anyone aware of a change to the licence test system coming in next year?
Talking to one of my students yesterday who was saying that new additional tests and age requirements are being implemented as of Jan Feb.
His source was his brother who got it off the Internet, so he may be having his leg pulled. I haven't seen anything in MCN, MAG or other bike mags, and I must confess I don't tend to pay too much attention to that sort of news as it's a couple of years since it affected me!!!

Not sure, but what winds me up is car test never seem to be treated in the same proportion, and when they pass only money is an obsticle to the car you want, thats why I see yongers driving sports cars that their well off mummy and daddy paid for.

I have always been in favour of restricting people on age for certain CCs or power of cars to stop them being knobs.

Looks like he is right, it's spread all over the net even in MCN and other reputable sources.

At 17 = 125cc
at 19 = 400cc
at 24 = 600cc

I think before anyone gets a car license they should have to have ridden a 125 bike for 12months first.

This correct however my understanding there maybe some changes as to what u can do your teet on. The original proposals were set bhp however i have heard tht they were looking to introduce min weight limits however no one is sure as the dvla are all over the place !!

Also every time u want to go up a licence cat under these new rules u have to undertake additional training and test !! Absolute joke !! This is purely for making money !!.

Then u need to add the two stage test in as well and it makes u wonder why someone under 24 wud even bother with a bike !! And i think this is the time when we shud be getting people hooked !!

Rant over !!

24=600
thats taking the piss i was only 19st when i got my first 600.....
seriously tho, that ain't fair, you can vote, drink, have sex legally at the age of 18 (i think thats correct) but you can't be trusted to ride a 600 until 24, thats wrong, or am i reading this wrongly. the other problem is insurance for youngsters, it should be like spain where you insure the car/bike not the person driving/riding it......
HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!

It does seem an odd number to me (even though it's even  ) but 24 8O I would have thought it would have been 21. It's a load of old bollox cause one could just as easily kill themselves on a 125 as they could any other CC bike. If a car turns onto a small or big bike, the damage is gonna be the same. In fact sometimes a larger CC is safer in many ways as it has the power to pull away or escape a situation.

Yes the G/F's mate died a few years ago in a 30 zone on a 125 near Chorley Tesco's he was to fast on the bend, lost control run wide and hit a lamp post, his head was almost detached

If he had been on a 600 he might have had better brakes and a better equipped bike with better tyres who knows might have been still riding and might not have felt like he had to wring its neck for fear of looking like a child on a 125 when similar age mates had 1.6 ltr cars :wtf:

I'm just glad I don't have to do it now due to being old. I've a friend who's got a CBF1000 and he's on the verge of giving up biking as he's being priced off the road by insurance. He's 70, on about 1000 years NCD.

Oh bloody hell, Insurance has only just got to a reasonable level. Have I got rising prices to look forward to as I get older? When do they start loading it for age?

Don't know the answer to this but, what I will say is....Pretty much all 17-18 year olds are fcuking idiots on the road, and if you had a son of that age, with a full license, would you be happy to see them riding off into the distance on a ZX10 ??

I know I bloody wouldn't !!

The main problem is that for a restricted 33bhp bike you can't from Jan restrict a bigger bike, at least, not one with more than twice the power potential of the 33 bhp limit, or something like that.
It means you can't restrict a 600 or 1000 and use that as a 33bhp bike any more.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
