I find it strangely ironic how one of the initial selling (propaganda?) points for four-strokes in MX was teh (ill-founded) belief that it would drive down maintenance and the cost of racing. People got swept up in visions of racing MXs requiring a maintenance schedule akin to those of their cars. it was a sad day they stopped making the 2 stroke middleweight roadbikes, and then they drive them out of road racing and MX. at least they are still there in Trials and Enduro.
I am quite happy some of the snowmobile manufacturers (notably BRP/Ski-Doo/Rotax) stuck to the two-stroke and pushed its development. While some of the market has gone four-stroke, virtually all serious performance sleds have remaiend two-strokes, for obvious reasons. In the modern era, however, the DI two-strokes are virtually smokeless and odourless, while offering fuel conomy that is comparable, and in many cases superior, to the cammers......
