it was a sad day they stopped making the 2 stroke middleweight roadbikes, and then they drive them out of road racing and MX. at least they are still there in Trials and Enduro.
I find it strangely ironic how one of the initial selling (propaganda?) points for four-strokes in MX was teh (ill-founded) belief that it would drive down maintenance and the cost of racing. People got swept up in visions of racing MXs requiring a maintenance schedule akin to those of their cars. I sense a certain groundswell of support to bring back the simple, light and (relatively) inexpensive two-strokes.....

I am quite happy some of the snowmobile manufacturers (notably BRP/Ski-Doo/Rotax) stuck to the two-stroke and pushed its development. While some of the market has gone four-stroke, virtually all serious performance sleds have remaiend two-strokes, for obvious reasons. In the modern era, however, the DI two-strokes are virtually smokeless and odourless, while offering fuel conomy that is comparable, and in many cases superior, to the cammers......

same in the road race world...............I know someone who runs a 125 race team in the british championship where you can choose either an old 125 2 stroke, or a Moto3 4 stroke. to even get close to a top 5 result against the old Honda 125's you need to spend a small fortune on a Moto3 bike with a top spec engine, the off the shelf ones engine wont get you into the race as its not fast enough to qualify!
Then if you have the top spec engine the rebuild schedule and the list of parts that need changed is about 3 times higher cost than the old 125.

so it looks like the MOTO3 bike costs 3 times more, then the running cost is 3 times more..............and the 125s are still faster!
