I admire your strength of character to do such a thing.

I take it, and end up suffering for it, I don't think I have a spine

After jacking in work I couldn't believe the difference. Headaches gone. Gutrot gone. Insomnia gone. Depression gone. Haven't had a cold in years. And so on. It's only when you escape that you realise just how stressed you were.

Of course, moving to the south of France with a good woman also helps :D

You did the right thing Tony. In the past four years, I have walked away from two jobs in which the hours were ridiculous (the first, ranging from 80-100 hours per week; the second slightly fewer hours, but a real pressure cooker). Anyhow, health and family have to come first so kudos for making the right call.

AS an aside, it seems clear to me there is work there for two people, so why not hire two people. It's not like there aren't people looking for work, what with the global economy being what it is..... Corporate greed is really reaching new heights.....

simple answer. Still a lot cheaper to pay the overtime to one employee than to pay holiday / sick pay and employers National Insurace contribution for two employees. as you say.. Greed on the employers part..

Unchucked it, as I have been offered a substantial increase to stay, with more to come in the new year, plus no on-call, ever, and that's a lot more reasonable.

I should resign more often!
Only sting in the tail is that the company's moving to Stockwell (S London) in Feb, so it'll be a bike commute most days, and using a pool car while I'm at work- awful news, really.......

Well that's good news. Your obviously a valued employee. I take it you haven't been telling them any jokes then  Will you have somewhere safe to lock the bike up during the day while out in the car.
